30Operating InstructionsVoltmeterThe voltmeter displays battery and charging systemvoltage. An indication of low or high voltage (the redarea) indicates an electrical system failure. Thecause of the failure should be determined and cor-rected.Water Temperature GaugeThe water temperature gauge monitors enginecooling system temperature. If engine coolanttemperature exceeds 230° F (110° C), an overheatcondition exists; the water temperature light willcome on and the warning horn will sound.Oil Pressure Warning LightThe oil pressure warning light indicates that engineoil pressure is below the safe operating level [below7 PSI (48 kPa)]. This light (and warning horn) willcome on when the ignition is turned ON, but shouldgo off after the engine is started. If the light fails tocome on when the ignition switch is turned ON, itcould indicate a burned out bulb. If the light comeson during engine operation, stop the engine imme-diately and correct the source of the problem beforefurther engine operation.IMPORTANT: Continued operation of the enginewith an illuminated oil pressure warning light MAYcause severe engine damage (if a low oil pressurecondition exists).Water Temperature Warning LightThe water temperature warning light indicates thatengine coolant temperature is above the safe oper-ating limit and the engine is overheating. If thislight comes on, there may be a problem with:• Radiator cooling air flow (material packed intoradiator cooling fins, clogged air intake screen)• Low coolant quantity in cooling system• Engine fan belt• Thermostat functionStop the engine and correct the problem before fur-ther operation.IMPORTANT: Continued operation of the enginewith an illuminated water temperature warning lightMAY result in severe engine damage.Ignition SwitchThe ignition switch is used to start and stop the en-gine (and preheat the diesel engine). The switchhas four positions: is the glow plug preheat po-sition; “O” is the OFF position; RUN is the positionthe key returns to after starting; “S” is the START po-sition. When starting the engine, turn the key clock-wise to the “S” position. Do not hold the key in the“S” position longer than 10 seconds. If the enginedoes not start, return the key to the “O” position for atleast 60 seconds before making a restart attempt.Prolonged cranking can damage the starter motorand shorten battery life. Release the key when theengine starts, and it will return to the RUN position. To stop the engine, rotate the key counterclockwiseto the “O” position.NOTE: When starting the engine, turn and hold theignition key in the glow plug preheat position. Thetime required is approximately 10 to 30 seconds, de-pending on engine temperature. Refer to START-ING THE ENGINE.Ignition SwitchWARNINGIf engine cooling system overheating isindicated, continued operation of the en-gine, even for a short time, COULD resultin fire, risk of personal injury, and severedamage to equipment.Glow Plug Preheat OFFONSTART
