Operating Instructions34Correct Operator Hand Position on the Controls3. Reverse direction of the mower by pulling bothlevers backward.NOTE: Smooth action on the steering leverswill produce smooth mower operation. Remem-ber to keep the engine and ground speed slowuntil learning the control response.4. The FSC may be adjusted forward for fasterground speed and backward for slower groundspeed. When mowing, ground speed shouldbe adjusted to match the load on the cutterblades, i.e., as the engine pulls down in heavycutting, pull back on the FSC lever to reduceground speed. Adjusting ground speed helpsmaintain a balance between engine power andblade speed for high-quality cutting action.5. Stop ground travel by pulling both steeringlevers backward to the NEUTRAL position(tractor not moving) and then moving the FSClever to the NEUTRAL-PARK position.NOTE: If the tractor creeps forward or back-ward with the FSC lever in the NEUTRAL-PARKposition, the transmission control needs to beadjusted. Refer to ADJUSTMENTS of Trans-mission Control in Maintenance Instructions.ENGAGING THE MOWER1. Set the engine throttle at about 1/3 speed. Donot attempt to engage the blade clutch athigh engine speeds. This will drasticallyshorten drive belt life. Use only moderateengine speed when engaging the blade clutch.2. Pull the blade clutch lever SLOWLY up toengage the mower blades.IMPORTANT: DO NOT engage the bladeclutch when transporting the mower acrossdrives, sidewalks, loose materials, etc. DO NOTengage the blade clutch with the PTO shaftdisconnected (the mower deck removed fromtractor).Pull Steering LeversWith Left HandForward Speed Control(FSC) Keep Feet On FootrestWhen MovingCAUTIONA safety interlock switch (seat switch) willcause the engine to stop if the bladeclutch is engaged and the operator is notin the seat. The function of this switchshould be checked by the operator rais-ing off the seat and engaging the bladeclutch; the engine should stop. If theswitch is not working, it should be re-paired or replaced before operating themower. DO NOT disconnect the safetyswitches; they are for the operator’s pro-tection.CAUTIONIf the cutting blades strike a stationary ob-ject while mowing, stop the mower imme-diately, disconnect the electrical plug onthe fuel shut-off solenoid, lift the deck, andinspect the deck and blades thoroughlyfor damage. Make sure that the blade tim-ing has not been disturbed (the bladesshould be at 90 degrees to each other). Re-fer to REPLACING/REPAIRING the BladeOverload Shear Bolts in Maintenance In-structions if blades are out of time. Also, make sure the blade retaining nuts aretorqued to 60 ft-lb (81.3 N·m).
