MOTORCYCLE CARE AND STORAGE1-17After normal useRemove dirt with warm water, a mild detergent,and a soft, clean sponge, and then rinse thor-oughly with clean water. Use a toothbrush orbottlebrush for hard-to-reach areas. Stubborndirt and insects will come off more easily if thearea is covered with a wet cloth for a few min-utes before cleaning.After riding in the rain, near the sea or on salt-sprayed roadsSince sea salt or salt sprayed on roads duringwinter are extremely corrosive in combinationwith water, carry out the following steps aftereach ride in the rain, near the sea or on salt-sprayed roads.TIPSalt sprayed on roads in the winter may remainwell into spring.1. Clean the motorcycle with cold water and amild detergent, after the engine has cooleddown.NOTICE: Do not use warm water since itincreases the corrosive action of the salt.2. Apply a corrosion protection spray on all met-al, including chrome- and nickel-plated, sur-faces to prevent corrosion.After cleaning1. Dry the motorcycle with a chamois or an ab-sorbing cloth.2. Immediately dry the drive chain and lubricateit to prevent it from rusting.3. Use a chrome polish to shine chrome, alumi-num and stainless- steel parts, including theexhaust system. (Even the thermally induceddiscoloring of stainless- steel exhaust sys-tems can be removed through polishing.)4. To prevent corrosion, it is recommended toapply a corrosion protection spray on all met-al, including chrome- and nickel-plated, sur-faces.5. Use spray oil as a universal cleaner to re-move any remaining dirt.6. Touch up minor paint damage caused bystones, etc.7. Wax all painted surfaces.8. Let the motorcycle dry completely beforestoring or covering it.WARNINGEWA19050Contaminants on the brakes or tires cancause loss of control.• Make sure that there is no oil or wax on thebrakes or tires.• If necessary, clean the brake discs andbrake linings with a regular brake disccleaner or acetone, and wash the tires withwarm water and a mild detergent. Beforeriding at higher speeds, test the motorcy-cle’s braking performance and corneringbehavior.NOTICEECA24240• Apply spray oil and wax sparingly andmake sure to wipe off any excess.• Never apply oil or wax to any rubber andplastic parts, but treat them with a suitablecare product.• Avoid using abrasive polishing com-pounds as they will wear away the paint.TIP• Consult a Yamaha dealer for advice on whatproducts to use.• Washing, rainy weather or humid climates cancause the headlight lens to fog. Turning theheadlight on for a short period of time will helpremove the moisture from the lens.EAM30201STORAGEShort-termAlways store your motorcycle in a cool, dry placeand, if necessary, protect it against dust with aporous cover. Be sure the engine and the ex-haust system are cool before covering the mo-torcycle.NOTICEECA24250• Storing the motorcycle in a poorly ventilat-ed room or covering it with a tarp, while it isstill wet, will allow water and humidity toseep in and cause rust.• To prevent corrosion, avoid damp cellars,stables (because of the presence of ammo-nia) and areas where strong chemicals are
