Operation and important riding points6-46EAU16674ShiftingShifting gears lets you control theamount of engine power available forstarting off, accelerating, climbing hills, etc. The gear positions are shown in the il-lustration.TIPTo shift the transmission into the neu-tral position ( ), press the shift pedaldown repeatedly until it reaches theend of its travel, and then slightly raiseit.NOTICEECA10261 Even with the transmission inthe neutral position, do notcoast for long periods of timewith the engine off, and do nottow the motorcycle for long dis-tances. The transmission isproperly lubricated only whenthe engine is running. Inade-quate lubrication may damagethe transmission. Always use the clutch whilechanging gears to avoid dam-aging the engine, transmission, and drive train, which are notdesigned to withstand theshock of forced shifting.EAU16691To start out and accelerate1. Pull the clutch lever to disengagethe clutch.2. Shift the transmission into firstgear.3. Open the throttle gradually and si-multaneously release the clutchlever slowly.4. Once the motorcycle has reacheda speed high enough to changegears, close the throttle, and at thesame time, quickly pull the clutchlever in.5. Shift the transmission into secondgear. (Make sure not to shift thetransmission into the neutral posi-tion.)6. Open the throttle halfway andgradually release the clutch lever.7. Follow the same procedure whenshifting to the next gear.EAU16711To decelerate1. Close the throttle and apply boththe front and the rear brakes toslow the motorcycle.2.
