GM Series Operation Manual 71LONG-TERM STORAGEIf the engine will not be used for anextended period of time, special measuresshould be taken to protect the coolingsystem, fuel system and combustionchamber from corrosion and the exteriorfrom rusting.The engine can normally stand idle for upto 6 months. If it remains unused for longerthan this, please contact your authorizedYanmar Marine dealer or distributor.Before performing any storage procedureswithin this section, review the Safetysection on page 3.In cold temperatures or before long-termstorage, be sure to drain the seawaterfrom the cooling system.NOTICEIf seawater is left inside of the engine, itmay freeze and damage parts of thecooling system when the ambienttemperature is below 0°C (32°F).PREPARE ENGINE FORLONG-TERM STORAGENote: If the engine is close to aperiodic maintenance interval,perform those maintenanceprocedures before putting theengine into long-term storage.1. Wipe off any dust or oil from the outsideof engine.2. Drain water from fuel filters.3. Drain fuel tank completely or fill thetank to prevent condensation.4. Grease the exposed areas and joints ofthe remote control cables and thebearings of the remote control handle.5. Seal the intake silencer, exhaust pipe,etc. to prevent moisture orcontamination from entering engine.6. Completely drain bilge in hull bottom.7. Waterproof the engine room to preventrain or seawater from entering.8. Charge the battery once a month tocompensate for battery’sself-discharge.9. Remove the key from the key switchand cover the key switch with themoisture cap (if equipped).
