11• Blade speed should be adjusted to the condition ofthe lawn.• For a healthy lawn, never cut more than one-third of the total length of the grass at any onecutting. Lawn should be cut in the fall as long asthere is growth.• This mower is designed to be operated at fullthrottle to give you the best cut and do the mosteffective job of bagging the cut grass.WARNING: If you strike a foreign object, stop the engine. Remove wire from sparkplug and ground it. Thoroughly inspectthe mower for any damage, and repair thedamage before restarting and operatingthe mower again.Using the Mulcher• For effective mulching, do not cut wet grassbecause it tends to stick to the underside of thedeck, preventing proper mulching of grassclippings. New or thick grass may require anarrower cut. The ground speed should beadjusted to the condition of the lawn. If mowing hasbeen delayed and the grass has been allowed togrow in excess of 4", mulching is notrecommended. Mow using the grass bag (if soequipped) to reduce the grass height to 3-1/4"maximum before mulching.SECTION 6: MAKING ADJUSTMENTSWARNING: Do not at any time make anyadjustment to lawn mower without firststopping engine and disconnecting sparkplug wire.CarburetorWARNING: If any adjustments are madeto the engine while the engine is running(e.g. carburetor), keep clear of all movingparts. Be careful of heated surfaces andmuffler.Minor carburetor adjustments may be required tocompensate for differences in fuel, temperature, altitude and load. To adjust carburetor, refer to theseparate engine manual packed with your mower.NOTE: A dirty air cleaner will cause an engine to runrough. Be certain air cleaner is clean and attached tothe carburetor before adjusting carburetor.Throttle Control• If your lawn mower engine is equipped with athrottle control that needs adjustment or if it hasbeen replaced, proceed as follows. Note thatengines with fixed throttle cannot be adjusted.• Remove the screw that secures the cable clamp.Remove the cable clamp from the cable.NOTE: If you have a Tecumseh engine, simply loosenthe screw shown in Figure 10 so the cable will movefreely beneath the clamp. It is not necessary to removethe screw and clamp completely.• Push the throttle control lever on the handle all theway forward as far as it will go, then back it off one“click.” Make certain the throttle control leverremains in this position.• Push the control lever on the engine as far towardthe rear of the engine as it will go.
