Configuring VLANs 353 Click Apply to save your settings. To configure another port, click Port Configuration onthe menu again, and then click the port number thatyou want to configure.Speed/Duplex for 1000 Mbps ConnectionsYou cannot preset the speed to 1000Mbps. To run aport at 1000Mbps, you must enable autonegotiationfor the port. When autonegotiation is enabled, theSwitch will automatically connect at 1000Mbps, pro-viding the connected device also supports this speed.1000Mbps connections are always full-duplex.Half-duplex connections are only available for10Mbps and 100Mbps settings.CAUTION: Before manually setting a port tofull-duplex, verify that the device connected to theport is also manually set to the same speed andduplex setting. If connecting link partners are left toautonegotiate for a link manually set on this switch tofull-duplex, they will always negotiate to half-duplex,resulting in a duplex mismatch. This can result in asignificant reduction in network performance. If youare unsure of how to configure the speed/duplex set-ting, simply enable autonegotiation for the port. You cannot modify the speed/duplex settings of portsthat are members of a trunk or aggregated link.Supported SFP transceivers only operate at 1000Mbpsfull-duplex. Inserting an SFP transceiver into a gigabitport disables the corresponding RJ-45 port, even if nofiber cable is inserted.Configuring VLANsYou can use the Switch to create VLANs to organizeany group of ports into separate broadcast domains.VLANs confine broadcast traffic to the originatinggroup and help eliminate broadcast storms in largenetworks. This also provides for a more secure andcleaner network environment. You can create up to 64 VLANs, add specific ports toa chosen VLAN (so that the port can only communi-cate with other ports on the VLAN), or configure aport make it a member of all VLANs.Speed Duplex Sets the preferred speed and duplex modefor the port. This option is only availablewhen autonegotiation for the port is dis-abled. Available speed and duplex modesinclude:■ 10Mbps Half■ 10Mbps Full■ 100Mbps Half■ 100Mbps Full■ 1000Mbps Full (for ports 25 and 26only) – See “Speed/Duplex for 1000Mbps Connections” on page 35.Flow Control When enabled, controls packet flow sothat a sending device does not transmitmore packets than a receiving device canprocess. If flow control is disabled, packets may bedropped under certain periods of high traf-fic loads.By default, flow control is enabled.Option Description
