Setting Up Your Computer If You Have a Static IP Address 39Setting Up YourComputer If You Havea Static IP AddressIf your computer has a static IP address and you want to keep this for use with anetwork that uses or will use static IP addressing, you must make certain changesto the LAN Modem’s default parameters. These changes will allow yourstatically-configured PC to “talk” to the LAN Modem for its initial configuration. The procedure is described in this section. For Windows 95, 98, 2000 and NT 4.0, you can choose to use the EZ-LAN Wizard, located on the Companion Programs CD-ROM to automatically set up yourstatically-configured PC to access the LAN Modem. For other operating systems,or to perform this procedure manually, follow the steps outlined in this section. The LAN Modem is designed by default to work with a dynamically-assignednetwork. The instructions in this section are for advanced users only.By default, the LAN Modem is set up to establish itself automatically as the“gateway” for computers on the LAN to access the WAN. However, if a computeris set up for static instead of dynamic IP addressing, it will have a fixed IP addressassigned as its Gateway or Router entry that is not recognizable by the LANModem. In this case, when you connect your computer to the LAN Modem andturn on both for the first time, the LAN Modem will not be able to “talk” to yourworkstation, and you will not be able to access the LAN Modem’s configurationpages. To communicate with the LAN Modem for its initial configuration, you need tofollow the procedure outlined below only for the workstation that you firstconnect to LAN Modem. The basic steps for setting up a statically configured workstation are outlined inFigure 24.
