6-16 Software MaintenanceSoftware Maintenance OverviewSoftware maintenance of a switch means to upgrade the switch host software and Boot ROM throughthe host software package, which contains the host software and the Boot ROM program, and is withthe extension name of .app (S7900E.app for example).z Host software upgrade involves downloading the host software package onto the Flash of both theactive and standby SRPUs, and setting the main and backup boot files.z Boot ROM upgrade involves upgrading the Boot ROM of the SRPUs and LPUs through the BootROM program in the host software package.There are two ways to upgrade host software and Boot ROM programs:z Upgrade through boot menu.z Upgrade through command lines.However, you can upgrade the Boot ROM program of LPUs through command lines only.z To ensure the software version consistency between the active and standby SRPUs, upgrade thesoftware in the same way, that is, upgrade the software on both the active and standby SRPUseither through command lines or through the boot menu.z Since upgrading through command lines affects the services of the S7900E series less significantlythan upgrading through the boot menu, the former is recommended.Upgrading Through the Boot MenuYou can download the host software package onto the Flash of a switch in one of the following ways:z Download through a management/upgrade Ethernet port using TFTPz Download through a management/upgrade Ethernet port using FTPz Download through the console port using XMODEMAfter downloading the host software package onto the Flash, specify the main/backup boot file tocomplete the host software upgrade.
