STARTING THEENGINEThe car is fitted with an electronicengine lock device: if the engine fails tostart, see the paragraph "Fiat CODEsystem" in the "Knowing your car"chapter.PROCEDUREProceed as follows:engage the handbrake and placethe gearbox lever in neutral;fully depress the clutch pedalwithout touching the accelerator;turn the ignition key to AVV andrelease it as soon as the engine starts. If the engine does not start at thefirst attempt, return the ignition key toSTOP before repeating the startingprocedure. If, with key at MAR, the symbol onthe display stays on together withthe warning light on the instrumentpanel, it is advisable to turn the key toSTOP and then back to MAR. If thewarning light remains on, try with theother keys provided with the car.Contact an Abarth Dealership if you stillcannot start the engine.15) 16)110) 111)WARMING UP THEENGINE JUST AFTER ITHAS STARTEDProceed as follows:drive off slowly, letting the engineturn at medium revs. Do not accelerateabruptly;do not demand full performance atfirst. It is advisable to wait until theengine coolant temperature indicatorstarts moving.17)SWITCHING OFF THEENGINETurn the ignition key to STOP while theengine is idling.IMPORTANT After a taxing drive, youshould allow the engine to "catchits breath" before turning it off by lettingit idle to allow the temperature in theengine compartment to fall.18)WARNING15) It is advisable not to demand maximumperformance from your car (e.g. excessiveacceleration, long distances at maximumrpm, excessively intense braking, etc.)when it is first used.16) When the engine is switched off neverleave the key turned to MAR-ON to preventuseless current absorption from drainingthe battery.17) Never, under any circumstances, jumpstart the engine by pushing, towing orcoasting downhill. This could cause fuel toflow into the catalytic converter anddamage it beyond repair.18) A quick burst on the accelerator beforestopping the engine serves no practicalpurpose; it wastes fuel and is especiallydamaging to turbocharged engines.WARNING110) It is dangerous to run the engine inenclosed areas. The engine takes inoxygen and releases carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide and other toxic gases.111) Remember that the brake servoand power steering are not operational untilthe engine has been started, thereforemuch effort than usual is required on thebrake pedal and steering wheel.81
