Configuring IPX 12-3Configuring IPX Filter DefinitionsFiltering is the method by which the network manager controls usage of a mixednetwork by connection-oriented and connectionless traffic. (Connectionless trafficdoes not require establishment of a logical connection prior to data exchange.) A filterpermits or denies (depending on how it is configured) some or all of a specific type ofIPX traffic across an interface. For example, a filter can be configured to deny trans-mission of all outbound IPX SAP entries. The process of configuring and using IPX filters is as follows. Both procedures aredescribed later in this chapter.1. Create an IPX Filter Definition record.2. Create an IPX Filter Applications record, which will:u Identify the node that contains the interface to be affected.u Identify the interface to be affected (by specifying an ID that matches one inthe IPX Interface file, described later in this chapter).u Specify the filter category: RIP, SAP, packet, or RIP router.u Specify a direction: inbound or outbound.u Specify whether the filter(s) to be applied will permit or deny passage of thetype of data defined by the filter(s).u Identify up to 100 filters to be applied to the interface.3. Perform an on-line update of the definitions and applications (described under"Configuring IPX Filter Applications" on page 12-8).To review existing filter definitions, press [A] at the Filter Definitions and Applica-tions Configuration Menu (or [A], [A], [E], [F], [A] from the Main Menu). To configure a filter definition, press [B] at the Filter Definitions and ApplicationsConfiguration Menu. When prompted, enter:l Filter category : 0 = RIP, 1 = SAP, 2 = Packet, 3 = RIP Router. (The default is 0.)l Filter ID: 1–65535. (The default is 1.) This is simply a unique identifier.l Any other requested information, noting the values in Table 12-2 (on page 12-5) through Table 12-5 (on page 12-7). (Press [Enter] at a prompt to accept adefault value.)The display will depend on the filter category. The followingfigure shows an example of a SAP filter record.
