94 SEATS AND RESTRAINTSSecuring Child Restraints(With the Safety Belt in theRear Seat)When securing a child restraint in arear seating position, study theinstructions that came with the childrestraint to make sure it is compatiblewith this vehicle.If the child restraint has the LATCHsystem, see Lower Anchors and Tethersfor Children (LATCH System) 0 87 forhow and where to install your childrestraint using LATCH. If a childrestraint is secured in the vehicleusing a safety belt and it uses a toptether, see Lower Anchors and Tethersfor Children (LATCH System) 0 87 fortop tether anchor locations.Do not secure a child restraint in aposition without a top tether anchor ifa national or local law requires thatthe top tether be anchored, or if theinstructions that come with the childrestraint say that the top strap mustbe anchored.If the child restraint or vehicle seatposition does not have the LATCHsystem, you will be using the safetybelt to secure the child restraint inthis position. Be sure to follow theinstructions that came with the childrestraint.If more than one child restraint needsto be installed in the rear seat, be sureto read Where to Put the Restraint 0 86.1. Put the child restraint onthe seat.For outboard rear seat positions,put the head restraint in theupright position. See HeadRestraints 0 50.2. Pick up the latch plate, and runthe lap and shoulder portions ofthe vehicle's safety belt throughor around the restraint. The childrestraint instructions will showyou how.3. Push the latch plate into thebuckle until it clicks.Position the release button onthe buckle, away from the childrestraint system, so that thesafety belt could be quicklyunbuckled if necessary.
