77Shooting – Advanced FunctionsAdvanced FunctionsProgram AEUse the program AE mode to have the cameraautomatically set the shutter speed and aperturevalue to match the brightness of the scene.z The shutter speed and aperture value will showin red on the LCD monitor when the correctexposure cannot be obtained. Use the followingmethods to obtain the correct exposure andmake them appear in white.• Use the flash• Change the ISO speed setting• Change the light metering modeDifferences between the and Modes.z The following settings can be adjusted inmode, but not in mode.z For the correlation between aperture value andshutter speed, see page 78.• Exposure Compensation • White Balance• ISO Speed • Flash (Flash on)• AF Frame • Photo Effects• Continuous Shooting • Light Metering Mode• Manual FocusSetting the Shutter SpeedWhen you set the shutter speed in the shutter-speed priority AE mode, the camera automaticallyselects an aperture value to match the brightness.Faster shutter speeds allow you to catch aninstantaneous image of a moving subject whileslower speeds create a flowing effect and allowyou to shoot without a flash in dark areas.z If the aperture value shows in red, theimage is underexposed (insufficientlight) or overexposed (too much light).Adjust the shutter speed using the left orright button until the aperture valuedisplay turns to white.z The nature of CCD image sensors issuch that noise in the recorded imageincreases at slow shutter speeds. Thiscamera, however, applies specialprocessing to images shot at shutterspeeds slower than 1.3 seconds toeliminate the noise, thereby producinghigh-quality images. Nevertheless, acertain amount of processing time maybe required before the next image canbe shot.
