1-4Chapter 1 Before You Start Using the Scanner■ Some parts can only be cleaned when the poweris turned ON. In these cases, be careful to avoidelectric shock.■ Clean the scanner using a slightly dampened clothwhich has been well wrung out. Never use alcohol,benzene, paint thinner, or any other flammablesubstances.■ If the scanner makes strange noises, or gives offsmoke, heat, or strange odors, or the scannerdoes not function or other abnormalities occurwhen you use the scanner, immediately turn thepower switch OFF, and disconnect the power plugfrom the power outlet. Then, contact your localauthorized Canon dealer or service representativefor further information.■ Do not drop the scanner, or subject it to impact orstrong shock. Should the scanner ever becomedamaged, immediately turn the power switch OFF,and disconnect the power plug from the poweroutlet. Then, contact your local authorized Canondealer or service representative to have the unitserviced.■ Before moving the scanner, make sure to turn thepower switch OFF, and disconnect the power plugfrom the power outlet.CAUTION■ Do not install the scanner on a surface that isunstable or tilted, or in an area subject toexcessive vibrations, as this may cause thescanner to fall, resulting in personal injury ordamage to the scanner.■ Do not block the ventilation openings. Doing socould case the scanner to overheat, creating a riskof fire.■ Never place small metal objects such as staples,paper clips, or jewelry on the scanner. These itemsmay fall into the scanner, and cause a fire orelectric shock. Should such objects ever fall insidethe scanner, immediately turn the power switchOFF, and disconnect the power plug from thepower outlet. Then, contact your local authorizedCanon dealer or service representative to have theunit serviced.■ Do not locate the scanner in a humid or dustylocation. Doing so may cause a fire or electricshock.■ Do not place objects on top of the scanner. Suchobjects may tip or fall over, resulting in personalinjury.■ When unplugging the power cord, grasp it firmly byits plug. Do not pull directly on the power cord, asthis may damage or expose the cord’s internalwiring, resulting in a fire or electric shock.■ Leave sufficient space around the power plug sothat it can be unplugged easily. If objects areplaced around the power plug, you will be unableto unplug it in an emergency.■ Do not allow water or flammable substances(alcohol, paint thinner, benzene, etc.) to spill intothe scanner, as this may result in a fire or electricshock.■ Turn OFF the power switch for safety when notusing the scanner for a long period of time, such asovernight. Also, turn OFF the power switch, anddisconnect the power cord from the power outletfor safety when the machine will not be used for anextended period of time, such as duringconsecutive holidays.
