70Serial Communication for FC ProtocolProtocolsAll VLT 6000 drives have an RS-485 port which allows controlling thedrive by one of three different serial communication protocols. Thethree protocols, which can be selected in parameter 500, Protocol, are: Johnson Controls Metasys N2® Siemens FLN ® Danfoss FC protocolMetasys N2 is a registered trademark of Johnson Controls.FLN is a registered trademark of Siemens. If Danfoss FC protocol is to be selected, set parameter 500, Protocol toFC protocol .For further information on operating the drive through N2 or FLNcommunication, request the N2 or FLN Operator’s Manual fromDanfoss Graham.Packet CommunicationControl and Reply PacketsThe packet communication in a master/slave system is controlled by themaster. The drives are the slaves. A maximum of 31 VLT 6000 drivescan be connected to one master unless a repeater is used. If arepeater is used, a maximum of 126 drives can be connected to onemaster. The master continuously sends packets addressed to the slaves andawaits reply packets from them. The response time of the slaves is amaximum of 50 ms.Only a slave that has received a faultless packet addressed to thatslave will respond by sending a reply packet.BroadcastWhen a master sends a packet to all slaves connected to the bus at thesame time, it is called a broadcast. In broadcast communication, if thepacket has been correctly received, the slaves do not send replypackets to the master.ADDRESS 1MASTERADDRESS 126ADDRESS 2ADDRESS 31REPEATER
