The power factor indicates to which extent the frequencyconverter imposes a load on the mains supply. The lower the power factor, the higher the IRMS for thesame kW performance.IRMS =I12 +I52 +I72 + .. +In2In addition, a high power factor indicates that the differentharmonic currents are low.The frequency converters' built-in DC coils produce a highpower factor, which minimizes the imposed load on themains supply.1.5 SafetyWARNINGThe voltage of the frequency converter is dangerouswhenever connected to mains. Incorrect installation ofthe motor, frequency converter or fieldbus may causedeath, serious personal injury or damage to theequipment. Consequently, the instructions in thismanual, as well as national and local rules and safetyregulations, must be complied with.Safety Regulations1. Disconnect mains supply to the frequencyconverter whenever repair work is to be carriedout. Check that the mains supply has beendisconnected and that the necessary time haselapsed before removing motor and mains supplyplugs.2. [Off] does not disconnect the mains supply andconsequently, it must not be used as a safetyswitch.3. Ground the equipment properly, protect the useragainst supply voltage and protect the motoragainst overload in accordance with applicablenational and local regulations.4. The earth leakage current exceeds 3.5 mA.5. Protection against motor overload is not includedin the factory setting. If this function is desired, set 1-90 Motor Thermal Protection to data value [4]ETR trip 1 or data value [3] ETR warning 1.6. Do not remove the plugs for the motor andmains supply while the frequency converter isconnected to mains. Check that the mains supplyhas been disconnected and that the necessarytime has elapsed before removing motor andmains plugs.7. The frequency converter has more voltagesources than L1, L2 and L3, when load sharing(linking of DC intermediate circuit) or external 24V DC are installed. Check that all voltage sourceshave been disconnected and that the necessarytime has elapsed before commencing repair work.Warning against unintended start1. The motor can be stopped with digitalcommands, bus commands, references or a localstop, while the frequency converter is connectedto mains. These stop functions are not sufficientto prevent unintended motor start and thusprevent personal injury caused by e.g. contactwith moving parts. To consider personal safety, disconnect the mains supply or activate the SafeTorque Off function.2. The motor may start while setting theparameters. If this compromises personal safety(e.g. personal injury caused by contact withmoving machine parts). Prevent motor starting ,for instance by use of the Safe Torque Offfunction or secure disconnection of the motorconnection.3. A motor that has been stopped with the mainssupply connected, may start if faults occur in theelectronics of the frequency converter, throughtemporary overload, or if a fault in the powersupply grid or motor connection is remedied. Ifunintended start must be prevented for personalsafety reasons (e.g. risk of injury caused bycontact with moving machine parts), the normalstop functions of the frequency converter are notsufficient. In such cases, disconnect mains supplyor activate Safe Torque Off.NOTICEWhen using Safe Torque Off, always follow theinstructions in the section Safe Torque Off of the DesignGuide.4. Control signals from, or internally within, thefrequency converter may in rare cases beactivated in error, be delayed or fail to occurentirely. When used in situations where safety iscritical, e.g. when controlling the electromagneticbrake function of a hoist application, thesecontrol signals must not be relied on exclusively.Introduction VLT® AutomationDrive FC 301/302 Programming Guide6 MG33MH02 - Rev. 2013-09-3011
