2-10 Dell OptiPlex GXiMini Tower Systems Reference and Installation GuideECCECC determines whether the system’s error correctioncode (ECC) capability is turned On (the default option)or Off. Your system supports ECC only if all the installedDIMMs are ECC DIMMs. If any of the installed DIMMsare not ECC DIMMs, this category does not appear.System Data CategoriesThe following categories, which are not selectable, dis-play information about the system:• Microprocessor displays the type of microprocessorinstalled in the computer.• External Cache displays the size of the integratedcache (256 or 512 KB).• Video Memory displays the amount of video mem-ory detected in your system.• System Memory indicates the entire amount ofinstalled memory detected in your system, except formemory on Expanded Memory Specification (EMS)expansion cards. After adding memory, check thiscategory to confirm that the new memory is installedcorrectly and is recognized by the system.• Service Tag displays the system’s five-characterservice tag number, which was programmed intoNVRAM by Dell during the manufacturing process.Refer to this number during technical assistance orservice calls. The service tag number is alsoaccessed by certain Dell support software, includingthe diagnostics software.• Asset Tag displays the customer-programmable assettag number for the system if an asset tag number hasbeen assigned. You can use the Asset Tag utility toenter an asset tag number up to ten characters longinto NVRAM. For information on this utility, see“Using Drivers and Utilities” in your online SystemUser’s Guide.Using the System Password FeatureYour Dell system is shipped to you without the systempassword feature enabled. If system security is a concern, you should operate your system only with system pass-word protection. You can assign a system password, as described in thenext subsection, “Assigning a System Password,” when-ever you use the System Setup program. After a systempassword is assigned, only those who know the passwordhave full use of the system. When the System Password category is set to Enabled, the computer system prompts you for the system pass-word just after the system boots. To change an existing system password, you must knowthe password (see “Deleting or Changing an ExistingSystem Password” found later in this section). If youassign and later forget a system password, you need tobe able to remove the computer cover to change ajumper setting that disables the system password fea-ture (see “Disabling a Forgotten Password” foundlater in this chapter). Note that you erase the setuppassword at the same time.Assigning a System PasswordBefore you can assign a system password, you must enterthe System Setup program and check the System Pass-word category.CAUTION: The password features provide a basiclevel of security for the data on your system. How-ever, they are not foolproof. If your data requiresmore security, it is your responsibility to obtain anduse additional forms of protection, such as dataencryption programs.CAUTION: If you leave your system running andunattended without having a system passwordassigned or leave your computer unlocked so thatsomeone can disable the password by changing ajumper setting, anyone can access the data storedon your hard-disk drive.
