If acharacter is illegal for password use, the system emits abeep.NOTES: The setup password can be the same as the sys-tem password.If the two passwords are different, the setup password canbe used as an alternate system password. However, thesystem password cannot be used in place of the setuppassword.After you verify the password, the Setup Password set-ting changes to Enabled. The next time you enter theSystem Setup program, the system prompts you for thesetup password.A change to the Setup Password category becomes effec-tive immediately (rebooting the system is not required).Operating With a Setup PasswordEnabledIf Setup Password is set to Enabled, you must enter thecorrect setup password before you can modify the major-ity of the System Setup categories.When you start the System Setup program, Page 2 of theSystem Setup screens appears with the Setup Passwordcategory highlighted, prompting you to type thepassword.If you do not enter the correct password in three tries, thesystem lets you view, but not modify, the System Setupscreens—with the following exceptions:• You can still modify the Date, Time, CPU Speed,Num Lock, and Speaker categories.• If System Password is not enabled and is not lockedvia the Password Status category, you can assign asystem password. (However, you cannot disable orchange an existing system password.)NOTE: You can use the Password Status category inconjunction with Setup Password to protect SystemPassword from unauthorized changes. For moreinformation, see “Password Status” found earlier inthis chapter.Deleting or Changing an Existing SetupPasswordTo delete or change an existing setup password, performthe following steps:1. Enter the System Setup program.2. Highlight the Setup Password category, and pressthe left- or right-arrow key to delete the existingsetup password.The setting changes to Not Enabled.3. If you want to assign a new setup password, fol-low the procedure in “Assigning a SetupPassword” found earlier in this section.Disabling a Forgotten PasswordIf you forget your system or setup password, you cannotoperate your system or change settings in the SystemSetup program, respectively, until you open the com-puter, change the password jumper setting to disable thepasswords, and erase the existing passwords.To disable a forgotten password, perform the followingsteps:1. Remove the computer cover according to theinstructions in “Removing the Computer Cover”in Chapter 5.2. Remove the jumper plug from the PSWD jumperto disable the password features.Refer to “Jumpers” in Chapter 5 for jumper infor-mation and to Figure 5-6 for the location of thepassword jumper (labeled “PSWD”) on the systemboard.3.
