Introduction 1-1Chapter 1IntroductionDell® OptiPlex® Gs and Gs+ low-profile systems arehigh-speed, expandable personal computers designedaround Intel® Pentium® microprocessors. Each systemuses a high-performance Peripheral ComponentInterconnect (PCI) design that allows you to configurethe computer system to your initial requirements and thenadd Dell-supported upgrades as necessary. These systemsalso support the Industry-Standard Architecture (ISA)bus for older expansion devices. This chapter describes the major hardware and softwarefeatures of your system, provides information aboutaccessing the online documentation, and tells you whereto find help if you need it.System FeaturesYour system offers the following features:• An Intel Pentium microprocessor. The followingmicroprocessor options are available:— An Intel Pentium microprocessor with an inter-nal speed of 133 megahertz (MHz) and anexternal speed of 66 MHz— An Intel Pentium microprocessor with an inter-nal speed of 166 MHz and an external speed of66 MHz— An Intel Pentium microprocessor with an inter-nal speed of 200 MHz and an external speed of66 MHzThe Pentium microprocessor has an 8-kilobyte (KB)internal data cache and an 8-KB internal instructioncache, an internal math coprocessor, and otheradvanced internal logic. The < CTRL>< ALT >< \> key combination lets youswitch between the microprocessor’s rated speed anda slower compatibility speed.NOTE: The <\> key combinationis not available under the Microsoft® Windows NT ®and IBM® OS/2® operating systems.• An integrated cache with 256 KB of static random-access memory (SRAM). Cache memory enhancesthe speed of many microprocessor operations bystoring the most recently accessed contents of sys-tem memory.• System memory that can be increased up to128 megabytes (MB) by installing pairs of 4-, 8-,16-, or 32-MB extended-data out (EDO) single in-line memory modules (SIMMs) in the four SIMMsockets on the system board. EDO SIMMs offerimproved performance by using a shorter page-modecycle time while accessing data within a single pageof memory. See “Adding Memory” in Chapter 6 fordetails.• Self-Monitoring Analysis Reporting Technology(SMART) support, which warns you at systemstart-up if your hard-disk drive has becomeunreliable. To take advantage of this technology, youmust have a SMART-compliant hard-disk drive inyour computer. All the hard-disk drives shipped withthe Dell OptiPlex Gs and Gs+ systems are SMART-compliant.• Full compliance with PCI specification 2.0.• Full Plug and Play version 1.0a capability, whichgreatly simplifies the installation of expansion cards.Plug and Play support included in the system’s basicinput/output system (BIOS) allows you to installPlug and Play expansion cards without setting jump-ers or switches or performing other configuration93816BK0.BK : 93816c10.frm Page 1 Monday, September 16, 1996 1:21 PM
