support.dell.com Glossary 1GlossaryThe following terms relate to the switchand Fibre Channel connections.Definition of TermsAlias ServerA fabric software facility that supportsmulticast group management.Arbitrated LoopThe FC Arbitrated Loop (FC-AL) is a stan-dard defined on top of the FC-PHstandard. It defines the arbitration on aloop where several FC nodes share a com-mon medium.Community (SNMP)An SNMP community is a relationship be-tween an SNMP agent and a set of SNMPmanagers that defines authentication, ac-cess control, and proxy characteristics.CreditCredit, applied to a switch, is a numericvalue that represents the maximum num-ber of receive buffers provided by anF_Port or FL_Port to its attached N_Portor NL_Port respectively such that theN_Port or NL_Port may transmit frameswithout over-running the F_Port orNL_Port.Class 2In Class-2 service, the fabric and destina-tion N_Port provide connectionlessservice with notification of delivery or non-delivery between the two N_Ports.Class 3Class-3 service provides a connectionlessservice without notification of delivery be-tween N_Ports. The transmission androuting of Class-3 frames is the same asfor Class-2 frames.Domain_IDThe domain number uniquely identifiesthe switch in a fabric. This switch domainID is normally automatically assigned bythe switch and may be any value between0 and 239. This number may also be as-signed manually.E_PortA port is designated an E_Port when it isused as an interswitch expansion port toconnect to the E_Port of another switchto build a larger switch fabric.E_D_TOV (Error Detect Time OutValue)E_D_TOV (Error-Detect Time-Out Value)defines the time the switch waits for anexpected response before declaring an er-ror condition. The error detect time outvalue is adjustable in 1ms incrementsfrom 2 seconds up to 10 seconds.FabricThe name applied to a network resultingfrom the interconnection of switches anddevices comprised of high-speed fiberconnections. A fabric is an active, intelli-gent, nonshared interconnect scheme fornodes.
