Eaton SONIX Vw2 Technical Manual
Sonix Vw2 Technical Manual6 SONIX VW2 TECHNICAL MANUAL TM368 / A May 2022 www.eaton.com1 IntroductionThese instructions are intended for all users who willhave to install, commission, configure and setup theSonix Vw2 Termination Unit. For this, the manual is action-oriented and explains howto achieve a certain objective on a step-by-step basis. It is assumed that you have the necessary electrical, electronic and telecommunications experience toundertake the work. If in doubt, please consult Eaton.1.1 Eaton quality assuranceEaton design, manufacture, install and commission allour products to the highest standards of quality. Thisquality process is embraced and adopted throughout thegroup in all areas of our operations. This is demonstrated by our compliance and strictadherence to ISO 9001, 14001, ATEX, IECEX policies. On receipt of the product, ensure that the cartons areundamaged and that the contents are all correct andcomplete.Should this product reach you in an unsatisfactorycondition please report this to Eaton to enable us torectify and investigate the fault in a speedy manner.1.2 About SonixThe Sonix PA/GA system is designed around a highlysecure & flexible architecture, that removes the needfor lengthy engineering cycles, bespoke and costlysoftware, custom field engineering or expensive onsitesupport. This results in a highly effective and flexiblecommunications solution for the next generation. The Sonix system is rigorously designed for installationin both safe area or potentially explosive environments, using latest protection philosophies including EEx-e, -d,-i, -m and -p to ensure the highest levels of safety whilstincreasing operational features. The Sonix PA/GA System is designed to meet andsurpass the requirements of ATEX, IECEx, DNV, BV,ABS, IMO and PFEER, with other regional certificationspending. Please refer to Sonix system technical manual for anyfurther information.1.3 About the productSonix Vw2 unit is a compact, high capacity beacon loopcontrol and monitoring device. It autonomously monitorsand supervises beacon cable installation and loopintegrity with a discrete, non-visual signal, and at thesame time operates as client to the 2Mx (PAGA CentralMatrix controller), i.e. it receives data packets, acts onthat data and sends a response back to the 2Mx.The robust and industrial design of the module ensuresits protection against open and short circuit associatedwith field loop faults. In the event of such commonfield loop faults, the Vw2 rapidly detects, reports anddiagnoses the fault, reporting this information back tothe 2Mx controller and the SAS (Sonix AdministrationSoftware – available separately from Eaton) application, with the latter also serving as the configuration andmonitoring tool. The unit – in the form of a PCB held by a din rail carrier– is provided with industrial beacon loop terminals tosecurely and safely isolate the field cables for testingand fault rectification. The Vw2 always ensures that fieldbeacons are driven with power signals in both directions. This self-healing ring design guarantees that, in the eventof an open circuit condition, critical visual communicationis not lost. Additionally, the PCB form of the unit allowsfor quick and easy installation and replacement of anyunits, while keeping low rack footprint. The Vw2 provides dual channel control and monitoring ofbeacon loops, and up to six Vw2 units can be connected, providing 12 channels of independent control (if morethan 12 channels are required, please talk to the Eatonrepresentative).Connection to the 2Mx module is maintained via a fullyredundant, self-healing data loop consisting of twoRJ45/Cat 6A cables – this type of connection is centralto the architecture of the Sonix PA/GA system. Thisensures that connectivity of the Vw2 is vastly simplified, plug and play, quick to install and reliable. If extraequipment is needed within the system, it can simplybe added to the loop without extensive re-wiring of thesystem. All inputs and outputs are always designed to be fail safeand reliable to ensure consistent, unfailing operation.1.4 Key featuresSonix Vw2 is designed to provide the following features:• Compact and efficient DIN rail mount fixing.• Fully configurable via SAS Software.• Low rack footprint.• Monitors and reports on 2 loops of beacons.• Individual control of up to 2 loops of beacons.• High integrity field cable monitoring.• Rapid reporting of line fault conditions.• Design focused MTBF/MTTR.• Low thermal emissions.• Operating on self-healing ring.• Dual RJ45 connectivity for easy maintenance.• Dual 10A switching channels.• Field cable lightning suppression. |
