IBM System x3950 M2 and x3850 M2 Technical Introduction 31 A RAID array created with the SAS LSI 1078 can be migrated for use with theServeRAID-MR10k, but the reverse is not possible. This means that if you create RAID-0 and RAID-1 arrays using the onboard LSI 1078Integrated RAID controller and later install a ServeRAID-MR10k, you will be given theoption to convert those arrays to the format used by the MR10k. However, if you wish tolater remove the MR10k, you must first save all your data because the data in those arrayswill be inaccessible by the LSI 1078 Integrated RAID controller. For more detailed information, refer to Chapter 3 of ServeRAID-MR10k User’s Guide, available on the ServeRAID MR10 Support CD which can be downloaded in ISO formatfrom:http://www.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=psg1MIGR-5073160 The onboard LSI 1078 and the ServeRAID-MR10k are not supported with the ServeRAIDmanager. Use the MegaRAID Storage Manager (MSM) instead. One or more arrays can be formed using both the four internal disks and disks in anexternal disk enclosure such as the EXP3000 attached to the external SAS port.ServeRAID-MR10MThe x3850 M2 and x3950 M2 also support the ServeRAID-MR10M, part number 43W4339,which has the following features: PCI Express x8 adapter card Supports SAS and SATA 2 Two external x4 ports using SFF-8088 connectors (no internal SAS connectors) 256 MB onboard cache using DDR2 memory Onboard battery backup unit (power for up to 72 hours; replace annually using FRU43W4342) RAID levels 0, 1, 10, 5, 50, 6, 60 Supports the EXP3000 enclosure with cascading of enclosures of up to 9 per port Up to seven can be installed in the x3850 M2 and x3950 M2. More than three, however, will require custom testing using the IBM SPORE process.Refer to ServerProven® at the following Web site for the latest list of supported adapters andhot-swap SAS drives:http://www.ibm.com/servers/eserver/serverproven/compat/us/xseries/controllers/matrix.htmlFor a comparison of features of members of the ServeRAID family, see:http://www.redbooks.ibm.com/abstracts/tips0054.htmlThe following publications are available for further reference: ServeRAID MR10k Quick Installation Guide ServeRAID MR10k User’s Guide ServeRAID MR Software User’s Guide ServeRAID-MR Device Driver InstallationImportant: Prior to inserting the ServeRAID MR10k and converting your arrays, youmust install the ServeRAID MR10 driver. Failure to do so prior to the conversion willrender all data on those drives permanently inaccessible.
