Removing the coverThe following illustration shows how to remove the cover.Cover-releaselatchImportant: Before you install optional hardware, make sure that the server isworking correctly. Start the server, and make sure that the operating system starts,if an operating system is installed, or that a 19990305 error code is displayed,indicating that an operating system was not found but the server is otherwiseworking correctly. If the server is not working correctly, see the ProblemDetermination and Service Guide for diagnostic information.To remove the cover, complete the following steps:1. Read the safety information that begins on page vii and “Installation guidelines”on page 28.2. If you are planning to install or remove a microprocessor, memory module, PCIadapter, battery, or other non-hot-swap optional device, turn off the server andall attached devices and disconnect all external cables and power cords (see“Turning off the server” on page 13).Attention: In a dc power environment, only trained service personnel otherthan IBM service technicians are authorized to connect or disconnect power tothe dc power supply. See the documentation that comes with each dc powersupply.3. Press down on the left and right side latches and pull the server out of the rackenclosure until both slide rails lock.Note: You can reach the cables on the back of the server when the server is inthe locked position.4. Lift the cover-release latch. Lift the cover off the server and set the cover aside.Attention: For proper cooling and airflow, replace the cover before you turn onthe server. Operating the server for extended periods of time (over 30 minutes) withthe cover removed might damage server components.Chapter 2. Installing optional devices 31
