Chapter 3. Configuring the serverThe following configuration programs come with the server:v Configuration/Setup Utility programThe Configuration/Setup Utility program is part of the basic input/output system(BIOS). Use it to configure serial port assignments, change interrupt request(IRQ) settings, change the startup-device sequence, set the date and time, andset passwords. For information about using this program, see “Using theConfiguration/Setup Utility program” on page 58.Note: In a multi-node configuration, some choices or settings are definedthrough the primary server, and others must be defined on the individual(secondary) servers. Before you create a scalable partition, make surethat choices and settings on the secondary servers are correct.v IBM ServerGuide Setup and Installation CDThe ServerGuide program provides software-setup tools and installation toolsthat are designed for the server. Use this CD during the installation of the serverto configure basic hardware features, and to simplify the installation of youroperating system. For information about using this CD, see “Using theServerGuide Setup and Installation CD” on page 64.v Ethernet controller configurationFor information about configuring the Ethernet controllers, see “Configuring theGigabit Ethernet controllers” on page 81.v Baseboard management controller utility programsUse these programs to configure the baseboard management controller, toupdate the firmware and sensor data record/field replaceable unit (SDR/FRU)data, and to remotely manage a network. For information about using theseprograms, see “Using the baseboard management controller utility programs” onpage 77.v Boot Menu programThe Boot Menu program is part of the BIOS. Use it to override the startupsequence that is set in the Configuration/Setup Utility program and temporarilyassign a device to be first in the startup sequence. For information about usingthis program, see “Using the Boot Menu program” on page 80.v IBM DirectorIBM Director is a workgroup-hardware-management tool that you can use tocentrally manage System x and xSeries servers. If you plan to use IBM Directorto manage the server, you must check for the latest applicable IBM Directorupdates and interim fixes. For information about updating IBM Director, see“Updating IBM Director” on page 82. For more information about IBM Director, see the IBM Director documentation on the IBM Director CD that comes with theserver. If you have installed an optional SAS redundant array of independent disks (RAID)adapter that the server supports, the adapter comes with RAID configurationprograms that you can use. To configure the adapter and the hard disk drives thatare connected to it, follow the instructions in the documentation that comes with theRAID configuration programs. For a list of supported adapters for the server, seehttp://www.ibm.com/servers/eserver/serverproven/compat/us/.© Copyright IBM Corp. 2006 57
