identify the server by the default host name. The default host name for each serveris the last 8 characters of the BMC MAC address. The BMC MAC address can befound in the Configuration/Setup Utility program, on a label on the system board,and on a tag hanging from the front of the server. Once you have deployed yourserver, make sure that you remove the BMC MAC address tag from the front of theserver so that it does not impede airflow through the front of the server.The baseboard management controller comes with several utility programs that youcan use to configure the baseboard management controller, download firmwareupdates and SDR/FRU updates, and remotely manage a network. For additionalinformation about using these programs, see “Using the baseboard managementcontroller utility programs” on page 77.Installing the SMBridge management utility programImportant: To obtain maximum benefit from the Avocent SMBridge managementutility program, install and load the program before problems occur.To install the SMBridge management utility program on a server running a MicrosoftWindows operating system, complete the following steps:1. Go to http://www.ibm.com/servers/eserver/support/xseries/index.html anddownload the utility program and create the BMC Management Utility CD.2. Insert the BMC Management Utility CD into the CD-RW/DVD drive. TheInstallShield wizard starts, and a window similar to that shown in the followingillustration opens.3. Follow the prompts to complete the installation.The installation program prompts you for a transmission control protocol/Internetprotocol (TCP/IP) port number and an IP address. Specify an IP address, if youwant to limit the connection requests that will be accepted by the utility program.To accept connections from any server, type INADDR_ANY as the IP address. Alsospecify the port number that the utility program will use. These values will berecorded in the smbridge.cfg file for the automatic startup of the utility program.Chapter 3.
