11Figure 1118. Thoroughly clean spindle, arbor and chuck(Figure 12) with a soft rag and solvent, such asmineral spirits.Important: These three pieces must be free ofany rust protection, or lubricant. Any grease orresidue in these areas can cause the pieces toseparate, creating a safety hazard andpotential damage to the tool.Figure 1219. Lower the table out of the way of the spindlearea.20. Slide arbor (HP12) up into spindle. Turn thearbor as you push it, until the tang engagesthe slot in the spindle.21. Push chuck (HP11) onto arbor.22. Twist the chuck to completely retract the chuckjaws if they are exposed.23. Use a rubber mallet, or a steel hammeragainst a block of wood, to sharply tap thebottom of the chuck two or three times to seatthe chuck/arbor assembly. Note: Do not use asteel faced hammer directly against thechuck.6.6 Chuck key and wrench storageThe chuck key can be stored in the clip on thecollar (see Figure 8).The table locking wrench has a magnetic discattached, and can be stored on any metal surface.Do not store in an area near the worktable, orwhere the wrench could vibrate off into movingparts.7.0 Electrical connectionsElectrical connections mustbe made by a qualified electrician incompliance with all relevant codes. Thismachine must be properly grounded to helpprevent electrical shock and possible fatalinjury. The JDP-17 drill press is rated at 115V power, andcomes with a plug designed for use on a circuitwith a grounded outlet that looks like the onepictured in A, Figure 13.Before connecting to power source, be sure theswitch is in off position. It is recommended that the drill press be connectedto a dedicated 15 amp circuit with a circuit breakeror time-delay fuse marked “D”. Local codes takeprecedence over recommendations.7.1 Grounding instructions1. All Grounded, Cord-connected Tools:In the event of a malfunction or breakdown, grounding provides a path of least resistance forelectric current to reduce the risk of electric shock. This tool is equipped with an electric cord havingan equipment-grounding conductor and agrounding plug. The plug must be plugged into amatching outlet that is properly installed andgrounded in accordance with all local codes andordinances.Do not modify the plug provided - if it will not fit theoutlet, have the proper outlet installed by aqualified electrician.Improper connection of the equipment-groundingconductor can result in a risk of electric shock. Theconductor with insulation having an outer surfacethat is green with or without yellow stripes is theequipment-grounding conductor. If repair orreplacement of the electric cord or plug isnecessary, do not connect the equipment-grounding conductor to a live terminal.Check with a qualifiedelectrician or service personnel if thegrounding instructions are not completelyunderstood, or if in doubt as to whether thetool is properly grounded. Failure to complymay cause serious or fatal injury.
