209Appendix A: Advanced InstallationThis appendix gives you additional information on installation and configuration beyondthat given in the chapter on “Installing your KPC-3 Plus”. We assume you havealready read that chapter.PrecautionsThe KPC-3 Plus is grounded through its connections to your transceiver, computer, andpower supply. Make sure your transceiver is properly grounded and your computer hasequal ground potential. Follow the grounding instructions in your transceiver manual. The multi-conductor cable provided with your KPC-3 Plus is shielded. If you use othercabling, be certain it is shielded. We do not recommend the use of unshielded RS232ribbon cable in an amateur radio environment.Lithium batteries can explode or leak if heated, disassembled, recharged, exposed tofire or high temperature, or inserted incorrectly.Cable WiringCaution: Make sure the power to the transceiver, computer, and KPC-3 Plus is OFFbefore connecting any cables. The KPC-3 Plus uses a standard RS232 serial port with a DSUB-25 connectorconfigured as DCE equipment.Diagram of Pin Numbers on DSUB-25 ConnectorThe following diagram shows the pin numbering on the DSUB-25 connector looking atthe back of the KPC-3 Plus:Connecting to the Computer (DSUB-25)The KPC-3 Plus communicates with the computer using RS232 signaling. This iscompatible with PC compatible computers, Macintosh, dumb terminal, and most otherterminal devices. If your computer or terminal uses TTL levels (such as the Commodore64), you will need an after-market converter to supply the RS232 signals required by theKPC-3 Plus.
