Keysight M8000 Series of BER Test Solutions User Guide 253Setting up Generator 5M8040A Generator PortsThe M8040A generator ports are used to set the generator's clockfrequency and to define the output signal with respect to jitter, errorinsertion and signal output. In addition, the generator's output ports arealso used to supply a clock signal and trigger (for example, analyzer), andan arbitrary data signal for testing your device. The M8040A provides a high level of integration with built-in clocksynthesizer, de-emphasis, jitter and level interference. It allows you to setthe parameters for the built-in generator parameters such as amplifier,de-emphasis, HF and LF jitter, common mode interference and differentialmode interference. The following figure shows the M8040A generator’s ports. The M8040A generator’s ports include the following:• Remote Head - P and N PortsThe P and N ports of each channel must be connected to the M8057A.• Clk Out1 and Clk Out 2These are the Clk Out ports of channel 1 and 2, respectively. It cangenerate either a Clean Clk or all timing impairments like Data Out.• Ref Clock InThe Ref Clk In input can be used as reference frequency or as externalsystem frequency directly for the instrument. An external providedsignal can be measured at that input. This input is tightly involved in thesystem frequency generation.• Ref Clock OutThe Ref Clk Out is used to provide a 10 MHz or 100 MHz reference clockto the DUT or other test equipment.
