Making Measurements 2U1461A/U1453A User’s Guide 91Measuring CapacitanceSet up your tester to measure capacitance as shown in Figure 2-21.Table 2-12 Capacitance measurement positionLegend Default function Function when is pressedRotary switchposition Primary d isplay Secondary d isplay Primary d isplay Secondary d isplayResistance -Cycles between1 Continuity2 Diode3 Capacitance4 Resistance1 -2 -3 Cable length4 -CAUTION To avoid possible damage to the tester or to the equipment under test, disconnect circuit power and discharge all high-voltage capacitors beforemeasuring capacitance. Use the DC voltage function to confirm that thecapacitor is fully discharged.NOTE – The tester measures capacitance by charging the capacitor with a knowncurrent for a known period of time, measuring the resulting voltage, and thencalculating the capacitance.– is shown on the bottom left of the display when the capacitor is charging, and is shown when the capacitor is discharging.– To improve measurement accuracy of small value capacitors, press withthe test leads open to subtract the residual capacitance of the tester andleads.– For measuring capacitance values greater than 1000 μF, discharge thecapacitor first, then select a suitable range for measurement. This will speedup the measurement time and also ensure that the correct capacitance valueis obtained.
