THE O PERATING MODE PANEL95Hardware setupSome changes to the hardware setup must be made during the operation ofthe microscope. Other changes are generally only made when the hardwareis changed. The Operating mode panel and the Z-Controller panel are usedto change the hardware setup during the operation of the instrument. Therest of the hardware setup is distributed over several dialogs that are reachedvia the Options menu. These panels and dialogs are discussed in this chap-ter.The Operating mode panelThe operating mode panel allows you to select the operating mode that youwish to use, and to set up several operating mode related parameters. Theoperating mode determines which signals are measured, and which signal isused to control the Z-position. To open the Operating mode panel, clickin the navigator. The number of available modes depends on the Scan head and on the mod-ules built into the easyScan 2 controller. The modules required to be ableto use a certain operating mode are listed in table Operating modes andrequired modules. The modes can be divided into the static operating modesthat control the Z-position using the Cantilever deflection, the dynamicoperating modes that control the Z-position using the vibration amplitude, and the STM mode that controls the Z-position using the tunnelling cur-rent.Operating mode Required modulesSTM STM scan headStatic force AFM BasicDynamic force AFM Basic, AFM DynamicPhase contrast AFM Basic, AFM Dynamic, AFM Mode ExtensionForce Modulation AFM Basic, AFM Dynamic, AFM Mode ExtensionSpreading Resistance AFM Basic, AFM Dynamic, AFM Mode ExtensionOperating modes and required modules
