24Tutorial—Taking PicturesStep 5—Focus and ShootThe COOLPIX4500 has a two-stage shutter-release button.5.1 FocusPress the shutter-release button halfway toset focus and exposure. In mode, thecamera will focus on the subject in the cen-ter focus area, shown by the focus bracketsin the viewfinder. Focus will remain lockedat this distance while the shutter-release but-ton is pressed halfway. If your subject ispoorly lit and the flash is set to auto, theflash will pop up automatically and begin charging. Check the status ofthe autofocus (green) and flash-ready (red) lamps next to the viewfinder.On Flash will fire when picture is taken.BlinksrapidlyFlash charging. Remove finger briefly fromshutter-release button, then try again.• Flash is off and subject poorly lit.
