54Beyond Point-and-Shoot—Shooting-Mode SelectionA: Aperture-Priority AutoIn aperture-priority auto, you control aperture by rotating the command dial, while the camera automatically adjusts shutter-speed in the range 8 s– 1/2300 sto produce optimal exposure. Aperture varies in increments equivalent to1/ 3 EV (1/ 3 step).Faster Shutter SpeedsFor shutter speeds faster than 1/ 2000 s, choose an exposure mode of aperture-priority auto, select a smaller aperture (larger f/-number), and zoom the cam-era all the way out. If lighting is sufficient, shutter speeds of up to 1 /2300 s canbe achieved.Aperture and ZoomThe maximum and minimum values for aperture are the maximum and mini-mum values for the camera lens, adjusted for the current zoom setting. Higherf/-numbers (smaller apertures) can be achieved by zooming the camera in,lower f/-numbers (larger apertures) by zooming the camera out. Unless On ischosen for Fixed Aperture in the Zoom Options sub-menu ( 113), aper-ture will change as the camera is zoomed in or out. If, for example, youchoose the second-highest aperture setting with the camera zoomed all theway out, the camera will vary the f/-number to maintain aperture at the sec-ond-highest setting for the current zoom position as you zoom the camera in.
