131Connecting to a ComputerConnecting to Televisions, Computers and PrintersCharging While Connecting to a ComputerWhen connecting the camera to a computer via the supplied USB cable whileAuto (default setting) is selected for the Charge by computer option (A 152) inthe setup menu, the battery inserted into the camera is automatically chargedusing power supplied by the computer.See “Before Connecting the Camera” (A 127) and “Transferring Pictures from theCamera to a Computer” (A 128) for more information on connecting the camerato a computer.Power-on LampThe following chart explains power-on lamp status when the camera is connectedto a computer.B Notes on Charging with Connection to a Computer• The battery cannot be charged, nor can data be transferred, when the camera is connected to acomputer before the camera’s date and time have been set (A 22). If the camera’s clock battery(A 144) has been exhausted, the date and time must be reset before the battery can be charged orimages can be transferred with connection to a computer. In this case, use the Charging AC AdapterEH-68P (A 18) to charge the battery and then set the camera’s date and time.• If the camera is turned off by opening and closing the slide cover, charging will also stop.• If a computer enters sleep mode while charging, charging will stop and the camera may be turned off.• When disconnecting the camera from a computer, turn the camera off by opening and closing theslide cover and then disconnect the USB cable.• About seven hours are required to charge a fully exhausted battery. Charging time increases whenimages are transferred while the battery is charging.• When the camera is connected to a computer, an application installed on the computer, such asNikon Transfer, may start. If the camera was connected to the computer for the sole purpose ofcharging the battery, exit the application.• The camera turns off automatically if there is no communication with the computer for 30 minutesafter the battery has finished charging.• Depending upon computer specifications, settings, and power supply and allocation, it may beimpossible to charge the battery inserted into the camera via computer connection.Power-on lamp DescriptionBlinks slowly (orange) Battery charging.Glows (green)• Battery not charging. Charging is complete when the power-on lamp stops blinking orange and glows green.• When the camera is connected to a computer with Offselected for the Charge by computer option, the power-onlamp remains lit but the battery inserted into the camera is notcharged.Flickers (orange)• Charge the battery indoors with an ambient temperature of5 °C to 35 °C (41 °F to 95 °F).• A USB cable is not correctly connected or the battery is faulty.Reconnect the USB cable correctly or replace the battery.• Computer is in sleep mode and does not supply power.Reboot a computer.• The battery cannot be charged as computer’s specifications orsettings does not support power supply to the camera.
