30Basic Photography and Playback : Auto ModeUsing the FlashThe flash has a range of about 0.5 to 8.0 m (1 ft. 8 in. to 26 ft.) when the camera iszoomed out all the way. With maximum optical zoom applied, the range is about0.5 to 3.5 m (1 ft. 8 in. to 11 ft.) (when ISO sensitivity is set to Auto). The followingflash modes are available.Setting the Flash Mode1 Press X (flash mode).• The flash mode menu is displayed.2 Use the rotary multi selector to choose thedesired flash mode and press the k button.• The icon for the selected flash mode is displayed at thetop of the monitor.• D will disappear after a few seconds, regardless ofthe Photo info option(A117).• If a setting is not applied by pressing the k buttonwithin a few seconds, the selection will be cancelled.U AutoFlash fires automatically when lighting is poor.V Auto with red-eye reductionReduces “red-eye” in portraits (A31).W OffFlash will not fire even when lighting is poor.X Fill flashFlash fires when a picture is taken. Use to “fill-in” (illuminate) shadows and backlitsubjects.Y Slow syncAuto is combined with slow shutter speed.Suitable for taking portrait images with the night landscape as the background.
