48Taking Photographs—Sensitivity (ISO Equivalency)“Sensitivity” is the digital equivalent of fi lm speed. The higher the sensitivity, the less light needed to make an exposure, allowing higher shutter speedsor smaller apertures.Sensitivity can be set between values roughly equivalent to ISO 200 and ISO1600 in steps equivalent to 1/3 EV. Higher values of HI-1 (approximately equiv-a lent to ISO 3200) and HI-2 (approximately equivalent to ISO 6400) are alsoavailable for situ a tions in which high sensitivity is a priority. Sensitivity can beadjusted using the ISO option in the shooting menu or by pressing the ISObutton and rotating the main command dial. The ISO Menu1 Highlight ISO in the shooting menu ( 168)and press the multi selector to the right.HI-1/HI-2The higher the sensitivity, the more likely pictures are to be subject to “noise” in theform of randomly-spaced, brightly-colored pixels. Photos taken at set tings of HI-1and HI-2 will likely contain apprecia ble amounts of noise. Use only to capture naturallight ing under low light conditions or when a fast shutter speed is required to preventblurring. Nikon recom mends that image sharpening ( 65) be turned off at theseset tings to avoid heighten ing the effects of noise.2 Highlight the desired op tion and press themulti selector to the right.
