85Taking Photographs—ExposureExposure ModeExposure mode determines how the camera sets shutter speed and aperturewhen adjusting exposure. Four modes are available: programmed auto (P),shutter-priority auto (S), aperture-priority auto (A), and manual (M).CPU LensesWhen using a CPU lens equipped with an aperture ring, lock the aperture ring at themini mum aperture (highest f/-number). At other settings, the shutter release will bedis abled and a blinking will appear in the aperture displays in the top control paneland viewfinder. Type G lenses are not equipped with an aperture ring.Depth-of-Field PreviewTo preview the effects of aperture, press and hold thedepth-of-field preview button. The lens will be stoppeddown to the aperture value select ed by the camera inprogrammed auto or shutter-priority auto, or the valuecho sen by the user in aper ture-prior i ty auto or manualex po sure mode, allowing depth of field to be previewed in the viewfinder (if the op-tional SB-800 Speedlight is attached, a modeling flash will be emitted).b1—ISO Auto ( 182)When On is selected for Custom Setting b1 (ISO auto), the camera automaticallyvaries sensitivity in the range 200–1600 (ISO equivalent) to help ensure optimum expo -sure when the limits of the camera exposure metering sys tem are exceeded (exposuremodes P, S, and A) or optimum exposure can not be achieved at the shutter-speed andaperture selected by the user (exposure mode M). When sensi tiv i ty is altered from thevalue select ed by the user, ISO-AUTO will flash in the rear control panel and a flashingISO-A will be displayed in the viewfinder. In the camera photo information display forpictures taken at altered sensitivities, the ISO value will also be displayed in red. Notethat noise is more likely to appear in photo graphs taken at higher sensitiv i ties.On can not be selected for ISO auto when sensitivity is set to HI-1 or HI-2; simi lar ly,HI-1 or HI-2 can not be select ed when ISO Auto is on. If a flash is used when ISOauto is on, ISO will be fixed at the value selected by the user. If ISO auto is on whenautoexposure bracketing is selected in exposure mode M, sensitivity will vary aroundthe value selected by the user as required by the bracketing program.e4—Modeling Flash ( 195)If Off is selected for Custom Setting e4 (Modeling fl ash), the optional SB-800 will notemit a modeling flash when the depth-of-field preview button is pressed.
