45Taking Photographs—Image Quality and SizeImage Quality and SizeMaking Effective Use of MemoryTogether, image quality and size determine how much space each photo -graph occupies on the memory card.Image QualityThe D2Xs supports the following image quality options (listed in descendingorder by image quality and file size):Option DescriptionNEF (RAW) +JPEG fineTwo images are recorded, one NEF (RAW) image and one fine-qual-ity JPEG image.NEF (RAW) +JPEG basicTwo images are recorded, one NEF (RAW) image and one basic-qual-ity JPEG image.NEF (RAW) +JPEG normalTwo images are recorded, one NEF (RAW) image and one normal-quality JPEG image.NEF (RAW) Raw 12-bit data from the image sensor are saved directly to thememory card in Nikon Electronic Format (NEF).TIFF (RGB) Record uncompressed TIFF-RGB images at a bit depth of 8 bits perchannel (24-bit color). Time needed to record images increases.JPEG normal Record JPEG images at a compression ratio of roughly 1 : 8.JPEG fine Record JPEG images at a compression ratio of roughly 1 : 4.JPEG basic Record JPEG images at a compression ratio of roughly 1 : 16.NEF (RAW) / NEF + JPEGNEF (RAW) images can only be viewed using compatible software such as PictureProjector Capture NX ( 250). When photographs taken at NEF (RAW) + JPEG fi ne, NEF(RAW) + JPEG normal, or NEF (RAW) + JPEG basic are viewed on the camera, onlythe JPEG image will be displayed. When photographs taken at these settings are de-leted, both NEF and JPEG images will be deleted.White balance bracketing can not be used with NEF (RAW) images. Select ing an NEF(RAW) option for image quality cancels white balance bracketing.TIFF (RGB)About 30 s are required to record a TIFF (RGB) image (1 GB SanDisk SDCFX (Extreme III)card; recording time varies with make of memory card).
