B2500B2500 MFP User’s Guide224 - WLAN networkWLAN networkYou can connect your machine to a PC using a USBcable or make a wireless connection (via radio)with a PC or network. If you have a WLAN adaptor, you can incorporateyour machine as a network printer into a radionetwork. This works only with an approvedadaptor that you can obtain from our orderingdepartment.Type of radio networkA radio network or WLAN (Wireless Local AreaNetwork) is created when at least two computers, printers or other peripheral devices communicatewith each other in a network via radio waves (highfrequency waves). The transmission of data in theradio network is based on the standards 802.11band 802.11g. According to how the network is setup, it may be described as an infrastructurenetwork or an ad-hoc network.Radio infrastructure networkIn an infrastructure network, several devicescommunicate via a central access point (agateway or router). All data is sent to the accesspoint (gateway or router) from where it is re-distributed.Radio ad-hoc networkIn an ad-hoc network, the devices communicatedirectly with each other without passing throughan access point. The speed of communicationacross the whole radio network is as fast as theweakest connection in the network. The speed ofcommunication is also dependent on spatialdistance between transmitter and receiver, as wellas the number of barriers, such as walls orceilings.Radio networks (WLAN)Three steps are necessary to incorprate yourmachine into a radio network (WLAN):1 Configure the network to your PC.2 Set up the parameters for your machine so thatit can function in a network.3 Having set up the parameters your device, install the Companion Suite LL software ontoyour PC with the necessary printer drivers.Caution, when you are using a wirelessconnection, certain medical equipment, and sensitive or security systems, maybe affected by the radio transmissions ofyour device; in all cases, please followsafety guidelines closely. The PC and all other devices must have theirparameters set up to the same network asthe multifunction machine. All the detailsneeded for setting up the device, such asthe network names (SSID), type of radionetwork, WEP key, IP address orsubnetwork mask, must match thespecifications of the network. You will find these details on your PC or onthe access point. To find out how to set up the parameters foryour PC, please consult the users’ manualfor your server. For large networks, pleaseseek the advice of your networkadministrator.
