17RQT7458Getting startedWhen you use the discs recorded either PAL or NTSC, or playback atitle recorded on HDD using PAL or NTSC, refer to this table.(Y: Possible, t: Impossible)§1 If you select “NTSC” in “TV System” (➡ page 45), the picture maybe clearer.§2 Select “NTSC” in “TV System” (➡ page 45).§3 If your television is not equipped to handle PAL 525/60 signalsthe picture will not be shown correctly.≥When playing back a title recorded on the HDD, ensure that youmatch the “TV System” setting to the title (➡page 45).The HDD is a high precision recording instrument and because of itslong recording capability and high speed operation it is a veryspecial device that is easily susceptible to damage. As a basic rule, save important video content to a DVD disc asbackup.∫ The HDD is a device that is not built to withstandvibration/shock or dustDepending on the setup environment and handling of the HDD somecontent may become damaged and play and recording may nolonger be possible. Especially during operation, do not subject theunit to any vibration, shock, or remove the AC mains lead from thehousehold mains socket. In the event of a power failure the contentduring recording or play may be damaged.∫ The HDD is a temporary storage deviceThe HDD is not an everlasting storage device for recorded content.Use the HDD as a temporary storage place for viewing once, editing,or for saving to a DVD disc.∫ Immediately save (backup) all content as soonas you feel there may be problem with the HDDIf there is an irregularity within the HDD, strange sounds or problemswith picture (block noise etc.) may result. Using the HDD in thiscondition may worsen the problem and in the worst case the HDDmay no longer become usable. As soon as you notice this type ofproblem, save all content to the DVD disc.Recorded content (Data) on a HDD that has become unusable isunrecoverable.∫ HDD recording time remainingThis unit records using a VBR (Variable bit rate) data compressionsystem to vary recorded data segments to match video datasegments which may cause differences in the displayed amount oftime and space remaining for recording. If the remaining amount time is insufficient, erase any unwantedtitles to create enough space before you start recording. (Erasing aplay list will not increase the amount of time.)∫ When “HDD SLP (SLEEP)” appears in thedisplayThe HDD has automatically gone into SLEEP mode in order toextend the life of the HDD.≥Press [HDD] to activate.≥While in SLEEP mode play or recording may not begin right awaybecause the HDD takes time to be re-activated.≥If there is no disc in the unit, the HDD will go into SLEEP modeafter there has been no operation for 30 minutes or longer. Whennot using the unit, we recommend removing the disc.Types of disc or title recorded on HDDfor the type of connected TVTV type Disc/Titlesrecorded on HDDYes/NoMulti-system TVPAL YNTSC Y §1NTSC TVPAL tNTSC Y §2PAL TVPAL YNTSC Y §3 (PAL60)Accessory discsDVD-RAM9.4 GB, double-sided, type 4 cartridge:4.7 GB, single-sided, type 2 cartridge:4.7 GB, single-sided, non-cartridge:LM-AD240LELM-AB120LELM-AF120LEDVD-R4.7 GB, single-sided, non-cartridge: LM-RF120LEHDD (Hard disk drive) handling care∫ Setup precautions≥Do not place in an enclosed area so the rear cooling fanand the cooling vents on the side are covered up.≥Place the unit on a surface that is flat and not subject tovibration or impact.≥Do not place on anything thatgenerates heat like a video cassetterecorder etc.≥Do not place in an area often subject totemperature changes.≥Place in an area where condensation does not occur.Condensation is a phenomenon where moisture forms on acold surface when there is an extreme change in temperature.Condensation may cause internal damage to the unit.≥Conditions where condensation may occur–When there is an extreme change in temperature (moving froma very hot location to a very cold location, or vice versa, or whensubjected to an air conditioner or when cooled air directlyimpacts the unit.) When the HDD (warms during operation) issubjected to cold air, condensation may form on the inside ofthe HDD and may cause damage to the HDD heads etc.–When there is high humidity or a lot of steam in the room.–During the rainy season.≥In the above situation, without turning the unit on, let the unitadjust to the room temperature and wait 2–3 hours untilcondensation is gone.∫ Cigarette smoke etc. causes malfunction orbreakdownThe unit may breakdown if cigarette smoke or bug spray/vaporetc. gets inside the unit.∫ While operating≥Do not move the unit or subject to vibration or impact. (TheHDD may become damaged.)≥Do not remove the AC mains lead from the household mainssocket, or flip the power breaker switch. While the unit is on, the HDD is rotating at high speed. Sound ormovement due to rotation is normal.∫ When moving the unit1 Turn the unit off. (Wait until “BYE” disappears from thedisplay.)2 Remove the AC mains lead from the household mains socket.3 Move only after the unit has come to a complete stop (approx.2 minutes) in order to avoid subjecting to vibration and shock.(Even after turning the unit off, the HDD continues operatingfor a short time.)∫ Indemnity concerning recorded contentPanasonic does not accept any responsibility for damagesdirectly or indirectly due to any type of problems that result in lossof recording or edited content (data), and does not guarantee anycontent if recording or editing does not work properly. Likewise, the above also applies in the case any type of repair is made tothe unit (including any other non-HDD related component). This unitVCR
