CHAPTER 3: RARITAN REMOTE CLIENT (RRC) 31Connection and Video PropertiesIP-Reach's dynamic video compression algorithms maintain KVM console usability under varyingbandwidth constraints. Unlike competitive solutions, IP-Reach optimizes its KVM output for not only LANutilization, but also via the WAN and dial-up. By dynamically adjusting color depth and limiting videooutput, IP-Reach offers the optimal balance between video quality and system responsiveness in anybandwidth constraint.Power users of RRC should understand the following adjustable parameters in the Connection Propertiesand Video Settings dialog boxes, and familiarize themselves with the effects of each setting – in differentoperating environments, they can be optimized to your requirements.Connection PropertiesConnectionProperties Opens Modify Connection Properties dialog box to manuallyadjust bandwidth-correlated options (Connection Speed,Color Depth, etc.).To access the Connection Properties dialog box, either select Connection → Connection Properties fromthe RRC Menu Bar, or click [Connection Properties] in the RRC Toolbar.Connection SpeedThe Connection Speed selection box allows users to manually constrain IP-Reach from using more than adesignated amount of network bandwidth. While IP-Reach normally automatically detects availablebandwidth, users can use the Connection Speed setting to manually inform IP-Reach of a bandwidthconstraint – whereby IP-Reach adapts its behavior and simply refrains from even attempting to consumemore than the available bandwidth.Color DepthFor most administrative tasks (server monitoring, reconfiguring, etc.), server administrators do not requirethe full 24-bit or 32-bit color spectrum made available by most modern video graphics cards. Attemptingto transmit such high color depths, then, would waste an enormous amount of precious network bandwidth.Instead, IP-Reach can dynamically adapt the color depth transmitted to remote users, in order to maximizeusability in all bandwidth constraints.• Progressive Update option: The extremely innovative IP-Reach feature of Progressive Update canenormously increase usability in constrained bandwidth environments. When Progressive Update isenabled, IP-Reach first sends an image of the remote desktop at lower color depths, and then provideshigher color depth images as bandwidth allows. This option is very similar in philosophy as the common World Wide Web notion of "interlacedGIF" files.Note: When Color Depth is set to Auto Select Color (default), Progressive Update is automated. IP-Reachwill enable/disable Progressive Update as needed, disabling it for fast connections and enabling it for slowconnections.
