80 _TroubleshootingPrinting quality problemsIf the inside of the machine is dirty or paper has been loaded improperly,you may notice a reduction in print quality. See the table below to clear theproblem.The machineselects printmaterials fromthe wrong papersource.The paper sourceselection in theprinter propertiesmay be incorrect.For many softwareapplications, the papersource selection is foundunder the Thin Paper tabwithin the printer properties.Select the correct papersource. See the printer driverhelp screen.A print job isextremely slow.The job may be verycomplex. Reduce the complexity of thepage or try adjusting the printquality settings.Half the page isblank.The page orientationsetting may beincorrect.Change the page orientationin your application. See theprinter driver help screen.The paper size andthe paper sizesettings do notmatch.Ensure that the paper size inthe printer driver settingsmatches the paper in thetray.Or, ensure that the papersize in the printer driversettings matches the paperselection in the softwareapplication settings you use.The machineprints, but thetext is wrong,garbled, orincomplete.The printer cable isloose or defective. Disconnect the printer cableand reconnect. Try a print jobthat you have already printedsuccessfully. If possible,attach the cable and themachine to another computerand try a print job that youknow works. Finally, try anew printer cable.The wrong printerdriver was selected. Check the application’sprinter selection menu toensure that your machine isselected.The softwareapplication ismalfunctioning.Try printing a job fromanother application.The operatingsystem ismalfunctioning.Exit Windows and reboot thecomputer. Turn the machineoff and then back on again.Pages print, butare blank.The toner cartridgeis defective or out oftoner.Redistribute the toner, ifnecessary. (See"Redistributing toner" onpage 67.)If necessary, replace thetoner cartridge.The file may haveblank pages. Check the file to ensure thatit does not contain blankpages.Some parts, such asthe controller or theboard, may bedefective.Contact a servicerepresentative.CONDITION POSSIBLECAUSE SUGGESTED SOLUTIONSThe printer doesnot print PDF filecorrectly. Someparts ofgraphics, text, orillustrations aremissing.Incompatibilitybetween the PDFfile and the Acrobatproducts.Printing the PDF file as animage may solve thisproblem. Turn on Print AsImage from the Acrobatprinting options.It will take longer toprint when you print aPDF file as an image.The print qualityof photos is notgood. Imagesare not clear.The resolution of thephoto is very low.Reduce the photo size. If youincrease the photo size in thesoftware application, theresolution will be reduced.Before printing,the machineemits vapor nearthe output tray.Using damp papercan cause vaporduring printing.This is not a problem. Justkeep printing.CONDITION SUGGESTED SOLUTIONSLight or faded print If a vertical white streak or faded area appearson the page:• The toner supply is low. You may be ableto temporarily extend the toner cartridgelife. (See "Replacing the toner cartridge" onpage 67.) If this does not improve the printquality, install a new toner cartridge.• The paper may not meet paperspecifications; for example, the paper is toomoist or too rough. (See "Selecting printmedia" on page 37.)• If the entire page is light, the printresolution setting is too low. Adjust the printresolution. See the help screen of theprinter driver.• A combination of faded or smeared defectsmay indicate that the toner cartridge needscleaning.• The surface of the LSU part inside themachine may be dirty. Clean the LSU,contact a service representative.Toner specks • The paper may not meet specifications; forexample, the paper is too moist or toorough.
