42Entering textThere are many situations in which you need toenter text, such as when storing a name inPhonebook, writing a message, creating yourpersonal greeting, or scheduling events on yourcalendar.You are provided with the following text inputmodes:• ABC modeThis mode allows you to enter letters by pressingthe key labelled with the required letter once,twice, three, or four times until the desired letterdisplays.• T9 mode*This mode allows you to enter words with onlyone keystroke per letter. Each key on the keypadhas more than one letter – for example, whenyou press the 5 key, J, K, or L can be displayed.The T9 mode automatically compares yourkeystrokes with an internal linguistic dictionary todetermine the correct word, thus requiring farfewer keystrokes than the traditional ABC mode.• Symbolic modeThis mode allows you to enter special characters.• Number modeThis mode allows you to enter numbers.Note: The maximum number of characters which canbe entered in a message is reduced toapproximately half in length if you enter textusing uni-code characters such as .* is a registered trademark of Tegic Communications,Inc. and is licensed under U.S. Patent 5,818,437/5,953,541/ 6,011,554.Entering text43Changing the text input modeWhen you are in a field that allows characters to beentered, you will see the text input mode indicatorat the bottom of the display.Example: Entering a name in the PhonebookTo change to another text input mode:1. Press the right soft key indicating the currenttext input mode.2. Scroll to the mode you want to use by pressingthe Up or Down key.The Language select option allows you tochange the text input language.You can use the Add word option to add newwords into the T9 dictionary. See page 47.Note: If you want to exit the menu withoutchanging the mode, press the soft key orkey.3.
