24 Getting startedAbout P25 digital radiosYour P25 digital radio can be programmed for P25conventional or P25 trunked operation. Analogconventional operation is also available, with dual-mode channels able to transmit and receive bothdigital and analog calls. You may notice differences between digital andanalog calls in terms of:■ static noise in low signal areas, and■ radio coverage in marginal reception areas.Lack of static noiseOn digital networks there is no static noise, even inlow signal areas. This lack of static is because yourdigital radio removes the ‘noise’ from the call, so thatyou hear only clear voice.CoverageWith digital networks, a call remains clear and thendrops off quickly at the border of a coverage area. Thereason for this is that a digital call is either received orit isn't. With analog networks, the background noise ina call gets progressively worse when you are in fringeareas or even slightly outside normal coverage areas.
