2 – Getting started–The SONG menu28 TASCAM 788 Digital PortaStudioThe SONG menuThe SONG menu, as the name suggests, is con-cerned with the management of songs on the 788.You can load, save, copy and protect songs, as well asdeleting the data which is currently on disk butunused in the song.Creating a new songBefore you start recording, you must create a song onthe disk. This means that any audio data you recordon the 788 will be associated with that song until youselect a new song. Any currently-loaded song will besaved when the new song is created.1 Press the MENU key.2 Use the dial to scroll down until SONG ishighlighted, and press ENTER:3 Move the cursor to CREATE and pressENTER:4 Press the SHIFT + TITLE (MENU) key to enter atitle for the new song (as described in “Enter-ing and editing titles” on page 26).5 Use the dial to select between 16-bit and 24-bitresolution. As you might expect, 24-bit songstake up more space on disk than 16-bit songs ofthe same length, but the audio quality is higher(there is more subtlety in the dynamic range).6 Press ENTER/YES to close the current song,and create the new song.If you entered the song creation process byaccident, or you change your mind about creat-ing a new song, press the EXIT/NO key.TIPIf you need to name or rename a song later on, you canreload the song, and press the SHIFT + MENU (TITLE)key to enter a title for the song when the 788 is displayingthe title.Saving a songTypically, there is no need to perform a special oper-ation to save songs on the 788, as the 788 automati-cally saves the song. The function described here isprovided as a manual method of saving the song, towhich you can return (“Reverting to the previoussaved version of a song” on page 28):1 Press the MENU key.2 If SONG is not highlighted, turn the dial untilit is, and press ENTER.3 Turn the dial until SAVE is highlighted andpress ENTER.As the song is saved, appropriate messages aredisplayed. The current song will be reloadedafter it has been saved, and you can resumework on it.Reverting to the previous saved version of a songIf you have saved a song, or the song has been auto-matically saved by the 788 (e.g. when it was last shutdown), and you want to return to the version of thesong at the time it was last saved:1 Press the MENU key.2 If SONG is not highlighted, turn the dial untilit is, and press ENTER.3 Turn the dial until REVERT is highlightedand press ENTER.4 The 788 asks if you are sure. Press YES if youwant to throw away all changes since the lastsave operation, otherwise press NO.NOTEYou will lose all recordings and edits made since the lastsave, and they will disappear from the undo list (“Undoingand redoing actions” on page 70). This revert operation isnot undoable. Be sure that the work you have done sincethe last save operation is really work that you do not wantto keep before reverting to a previous version.
