2 – Getting started–The OPTION menuTASCAM 788 Digital PortaStudio 33The OPTION menuThe OPTION menu allows you to set various sys-tem-wide options affecting the operation of the 788.There are four sub-menus here: GLOBAL options, affecting the whole of the unit, MIXER parameterswhich affect the mixer, RECORDER parameterswhich affect the recording part of the 788, and theUSER WORD settings. The USER WORDsettings are described in “Setting and editing presetwords” on page 27, and are not described again here.Global optionsAs the name suggests, these options affect the wholeoperation of the unit.Key sense time Some of the keys on the unithave two different functions, spending on whetherthey are pressed and released in a short space of time,or whether they are pressed and held down for alonger period. The pitch control is a good example of this. If thePITCH/SSA key is pressed and released briefly, thepitch control is turned on. If it is pressed and held forthe time set here, a screen appears allowing you tomake the settings for the pitch and the slow speedaudition functions. The setting for the key sense time is from 0.3 to 2.0seconds, in 0.1 second steps.Meter peak hold time The meters shown onthe home display (“The “home” display” on page 26)and other pages can be configured to hold the peakvalue .This parameter can take the following values: OFF,where the meters do not hold the peak value at all,ON; the peak meters hold the value for a second orso and then drop back, or KEEP, where the peakvalue is always shown on screen until this value ischanged.Use the cursor keys to highlight the parameter, andthe dial to change itTIP\The KEEP setting is useful if you want a permanentrecord of the highest value, but you cannot keep your eyeson the meters during the whole take or rehearsal.Meter release time The meter “drop-back” timecan be configured to be from 0ms to 100ms in10ms steps using the cursor keys to highlight theparameter, and the dial to change it.Note that the meters are always peak meters, and therise time is fixed.Mixer settingsOnly one setting is currently implemented, asdescribed here.Fader settings This parameter allows the settingof the relationship between the physical and theinternal faders when scenes are recalled, etc. Thedetails are given in “Internal and physical faders” onpage 45.Recorder settingsTwo settings, related to each other, connected to therecorder operations of the 788, may be made fromthis submenu. These are the pre-roll and post-roll times concernedwith auto punch operations. Pre-roll refers to thetime difference between the point where playbackstarts before a punch operation and the punch point.Post-roll refers to the time after the punch-out pointthat the recorder keeps playing after a punch-out (orrehearsal). See “Auto punch operations” on page 55for full details. Both of these fields are set in the same way, by high-lighting the field and using the dial to set the value. The minimum time for both the pre-roll and post-rollis 1.0 seconds and the maximum time is 9.9seconds. The values are changed in 0.1 second steps.USER WORDDescribed in the section on entering and editing titles(“Setting and editing preset words” on page 27).
