2 – Getting started–DISK menu32 TASCAM 788 Digital PortaStudioNOTEYou cannot undo a disk format. You only need to format a disk for the 788 under the follow-ing circumstances: you are using a new removable disk(zip®, jaz®, etc.), or have connected a new external harddisk. The other time when you may want to format a disk iswhen a disk has become full and you want to re-use it.However, it is probably safer to delete songs one by one, rather than formatting the whole disk.Disks in the list are identified by their SCSI ID numbers(from 0 through 6; ID 7 is reserved for the788’s internalcontroller). If the disks are divided into partitions, the parti-tions are listed as Part1, Part2, etc.Selecting a diskThis selects the disk on which you will create newsongs and on which you will work. Only formatteddisks and partitions (see “Formatting a disk” onpage 31 above) can be selected as the active disk, andonly one at a time can be selected as the active disk.1 Press the MENU key.2 Turn the dial until DISK is highlighted andpress ENTER.3 If SELECT is not highlighted, turn the dialuntil it is, and press ENTER.4 Turn the dial to select the disk or partitionfrom the list, and press ENTER.Ejecting a diskThis only applies to removable media (MO, zip andjaz drives, etc.). Of course, you cannot eject a harddisk. Since the SCSI standard allows the disk to iden-tify itself as ejectable or not to the controlling device(in this case, the 788), you’ll never see a disk in thislist that cannot be ejected.1 Press the MENU key.2 Turn the dial until DISK is highlighted andpress ENTER.3 Turn the dial until EJECT is highlighted, and press ENTER.4 Select the disk to be ejected (if you have morethan one removable media drive connected youcan only select one at a time), by pressingENTER.NOTEWhile the 788 is connected to removable media drives andusing the media, the eject button on the drive is locked. This software function is the way to eject such disks.Checking disksYou use this operation to re-scan the drive list whenyou have inserted a removable disk and you need the788 to recognize it.1 Press the MENU key.2 Turn the dial until DISK is highlighted andpress ENTER.3 Turn the dial until CHECK is highlighted, and press ENTER.The 788 will close the current song and scan allconnected drives and partitions. The processmay take a little time, after which the song isreloaded.NOTEWhile this operation is in progress, do not turn off thepower to the 788, and do not turn any drives connected tothe 788 on or off. You should not insert or remove anyremovable media during this time (including recordable CDdiscs).
