7 - Advanced operations43 TASCAM DA-78HR2 Press the SUB MENU key until the displayshows RLs. (RLS—release) and then changesto the current value for that setting.3 Use the s and t keys to change the valuebetween the FAST (FAST), SLOW (SLOW)and MED (MEDIUM) settings.7.9 Sine oscillatorThe DA-78HR incorporates a digital oscillator forlineup and signal tracing purposes. This oscillator isa sine-wave oscillator at either the standard tuningfrequency of 440 Hz or a tape line-up signal at1 kHz.The oscillator signal level is at the nominal signallevel (but note that since the oscillator is a constantsine wave, it cannot truly be compared with “real-world” transient signals). To operate the oscillator:1 Press the SHIFT key so that the SHIFT indicatoris flashing, and press the MENU key until thedisplay shows Audio. 2--(AUDIO2--).2 Press the SUB MENU key until the displayshows OSC. ;;; (OSC xxx, for oscillator, with the current setting).3 Use the s and t keys to switch the oscillatorbetween the different settings (OFF (OFF),440 (440), and 1k (1k).When the oscillator is turned on, it overridesall other track inputs. The oscillator setting is not backed up with the othersettings.NOTEWhen using the oscillator, you should turn down themonitor levels in the control room and studio to avoiddamage to your ears (and the speakers).7.9.1 Recording the oscillatorAs mentioned above, the oscillator overrides all othertrack inputs, regardless of whether digital or analoginput has been selected.Recording the oscillator test tone is therefore similarto any other recording operation.7.10REC MUTE (recording silence)There may be times when you wish to prevent anysignal from reaching an armed track (in other words, when you record, you are recording silence onto thetrack.1 Press the SHIFT key so that the SHIFT indicatoris flashing, and then press the MENU key untilthe display shows Audio. 1-- (AUDIO1--).2 Press the SUB MENU key until the displaybriefly shows REC. MUTE (REC MUTE) andthen changes to show the current setting (thedefault is all off).3 Change the settings using the s and t keys.4 To set record muting for individual tracks, usethe track REC FUNCTION keys as track selec-tion keys, and change the settings individuallyfor each track using the s and t keys. The display will show the track number andthe current mute setting (e.g. TR 1 OFF (TR1 OFF).5 When no track is selected using the RECFUNCTION keys, the display reverts to ALL(ALL), as it does if all tracks are the samevalue. If the SHIFT and REC FUNCTIONkeys are used, each meter shows therecord mute status of the correspond-ingly-numbered track, as shown here(only one segment lights to show themute status).Press SHIFT and one of the RECFUNCTION keys (as described in4.1.1, “Peak meters”) to toggle thismeter mode off and on. The default atpower-on is for this mode to be on.Pressing the s and t keys together makes thedefault ALL OFF setting.7.11DitherDither is the technique of adding a known noise tolow-level signals, especially when converting from ahigh number of bits (for instance 24 or 20 input bits,as in the case of the DA-78HR) to a lower numberONOFF
