3 – Installation10 — TASCAM US-122sional incompatibilities. While mostOHCI systems have no problems withthe US-122, occasionally some olderOHCI systems will exhibit problems. Wehave found that, in the majority of theserare cases, a PCI-based USB card utiliz-ing an Opti-chip controller will workdependably. These cards (also availablein PCMCIA format for laptops) areavailable through a number of manufac-turers.Mac OSPowerPC running Mac OS 8.6 or better,and a USB port. Any Macintosh com-puter with one or more USB ports run-ning Mac O/S 8.6 or later (check theWeb site for updates), or Mac OS X10.2.3 or above.Very early iMac computers may needone (or more) firmware updates to usethe US-122. Which firmware update(s)is (are) needed depends on which MacOS version is installed in the early iMac.Apple provides details in Apple SupportArticle #58174.PowerBook G3 Series (or later) withbuilt in USB (or using a 3rd party PCM-CIA USB Card) have been tested andwork fine. Additionally, older PowerMaccomputers using 3rd party PCI-basedUSB cards also have been tested andwork fine. Any iMac, G3 or G4 willwork fine as well. Mac OS versions ear-lier than 8.6 do not implement full USBsupport, and are not recommended.Again, plenty of RAM and fast drives aresuggested.InstallationBecause the US-122 is a USB device,connection is straightforward. Simplyplug the USB cable into the US-122, andthe other end into your computer. How-ever, you should not connect the unitbefore installing the drivers (see below).Windows machines: Make certainthat your computer’s USB host port isenabled (normally, most standard PCBIOS settings default to enabled, butmake certain that it hasn’t been turnedoff in the BIOS).Also make sure that virus protection isturned off before you install the US-122drivers.NOTENOTE:Handle the enclosed CD-ROM with care. Ifit becomes dirty or scratched, it will beimpossible for a computer to read it, andthe software cannot be installed. If the discbecomes unreadable, a charge will bemade for its replacement.Do not attempt to play the enclosed CD-ROM using an audio CD player, as this maycause damage to hearing, as well as tospeakers, etc.Use only the enclosed USB cable to connectthe US-122 and the computer. Do not useother types of cable for this purpose, assome cables contain resistors. If youattempt to use such a cable, the audioinput and output will not work properly,and the sound level will be inaudible orvery faint.
