132Fuel consumption, fuel, refuellingFuel consumptionFuel consumption is determined underspecific driving conditions – see page 221.Fitting special equipment will increase theweight of the vehicle. This in turn increasesfuel consumption and reduces thespecified maximum speed of the vehicle. There is increased friction between engineand transmission parts during the first600 miles (1000 kilometres) . This increasesfuel consumption.Fuel for petrol enginesCommercially available high-qualityfuels are suitable (catalytic converter –see page 134, octane numbers –see pages 218, 219). Fuel quality has adecisive influence on the power output, running behaviour and service life of theengine. The additives contained in the fuelplay an important role in this regard. Youshould therefore only use high-quality fuelscontaining additives.Fuel with too low an octane number cancause pinking. Vauxhall cannot be heldliable for resulting damage.Petrol with a higher octane number canalways be used.Pump nozzles for leaded fuel cannot beinserted into the filler neck of vehicles thatoperate on unleaded fuel. The ignition timing is automaticallyadjusted according to the grade offuel used (octane number) –see pages 218, 219.Use of petrol with an octane rating of 95will ensure economical driving.Fuel for diesel enginesDiesel engines must be operated only oncommercially available diesel fuel meetingthe specifications of DIN EN 590. Do notuse marine diesel oils, heating oils orentirely or partially plant-based dieselfuels, such as rape seed oil or bio diesel,Aquazole and similar diesel-wateremulsions.The flow and filterability of diesel fuel aretemperature-dependent.Diesel fuels with improved low-temperature properties are thereforeavailable on the market during the wintermonths. Make sure that you fill the tankwith winter fuel before the start of the coldweather season.Additives can be used with diesel fuels withwinter properties that are guaranteed bythe manufacturer and when using dieselfuel filters that are heated depending onthe outside temperature.
