Bonnet release leverTo open the tailgate, push thetouchpad switch under the tailgatemoulding.LockingClose doors, load compartmentand fuel filler flap.Press button e to lock doors andactivate anti-theft alarm system.Press button e twice within10 seconds to deadlock all doors.Electronic immobiliser is activatedautomatically when key is removedfrom ignition switch.UnlockingPress button c to unlock doors,load compartment and fuel flap.Open doors by pulling the handles.Vehicle securityManual transmission:Reverse: With vehicle stationary,depress clutch pedal, press therelease button on the selector leverand engage the gear.If the gear does not engage, set thelever to neutral, release the clutchpedal and depress again; thenrepeat gear selection.Do not grind the clutchunnecessarily.When operating, depress clutchpedal fully. Do not use the pedal asa foot rest.Automatic transmission:P = ParkR = ReverseN = NeutralD = DriveManual mode: Move selector leverfrom D to the left.+ = Higher gear- = Lower gearThe selector lever can only bemoved out of P when the ignition ison and the brake pedal is applied.To engage P or R, press the releasebutton on the selector lever.Starting the engine: Turn key to position 1 Move steering wheel slightly torelease steering wheel lock Manual transmission:Depress clutch and brake pedal Automatic transmission in P or Nwith brake pedal depressed Do not accelerate Diesel engines: turn key toposition 2 for preheating andwait for ! to extinguish Turn key to 3 and releaseElectrical parking brake:Pull switch J, parking brakeoperates automatically withadequate force. For maximumforce, e.g. when parking with trailerattached or on inclines, pull switchJ twice.The parking brake can always beactivated, even if the ignition is off.Before leaving the vehicle, checkparking brake status.To release, switch on ignition, keepbrake pedal depressed and pushswitch J.Drive away functionDepressing clutch pedal orengaging drive gear D (automatictransmission) and then depressingthe accelerator pedal releases theelectrical parking brake.Opening the bonnet:Pull release lever below instrumentpanel on driver’s side and return itto its original position.Press the safety catch beneath thebonnet (located slightly to the rightof centre) and raise the bonnet.Secure the bonnet in the uprightposition using the support rodlocated at the front of the enginecompartment.Closing the bonnet:Before closing bonnet, presssupport rod into its holder.Lower bonnet and allow it to dropinto the catch. Check bonnet isengaged.Refuelling:Before refuelling, switch off engineand any external heaters withcombustion chambers (identifiedby sticker on fuel filler flap).Switch off mobile phones.Fuel is flammable and explosive.No smoking! No naked flames orsparks.If you can smell fuel in your vehicle,have the cause of this remediedimmediately by a workshop.Fuel filler flap is located at rightrear side of vehicle.The fuel filler flap can only beopened if the vehicle is unlocked.Pull flap at the recess and open.The fuel filler cap can be retained inthe bracket on the filler flap.Wipe off any overflowing fuelimmediately.Petrol engines - use unleaded fuelthat complies with DIN EN 228.Diesel engines - use diesel fuel thatcomplies with DIN EN 590.Fuel tank capacity - 54 litres.Engine oil:The engine oil level is checkedautomatically and a vehiclemessage (Code 79) appears in theDriver Information Center (DIC) towarn that engine oil needs toppingup immediately.However, check engine oil levelmanually every 300 miles or prior tolong journeys, to prevent damageto the engine.Check with vehicle on a levelsurface. Engine must be atoperating temperature andswitched off for at least 5 minutes.Pull out dipstick, wipe it clean,insert to the stop on the handle,pull out and read engine oil level.Insert dipstick to stop on handleand make half a turn.Caution: It is the owner’sresponsibility to maintain thecorrect level of an appropriatequality oil in the engine.Tyre pressure:Check tyre pressures, including the spare, every 14 days and prior to any long journey; tyres should bechecked when cold. This also applies to vehicles with tyre pressure monitoring system.Always inflate the spare tyre to the value specified for full load.The ECO tyre pressure serves to achieve the smallest amount of fuel consumption possible.Tyre pressures are shown on a label on the front left door frame.Tyre pressure data applies to both summer and winter tyres.
